If you have XP with SP2 installed, the only way to "forestall" the
compacting operation is to keep track of the number of times the program is opened and then do a registry edit of the "Compact Check Count" in the right hand pane under this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID for Identity involved}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 Otherwise the compacting will automatically take place after 100 opening/closing sequences of the program. That is the only workaround unless you use a 3rd party tool to reset it. Failing to compact regularly will eventually lead to problems since the database will become "bloated" since the space occupied by moved/deleted messages is not recovered until compacting occurs. It's quite possible to have an Inbox.dbx file that approaches the theoretical limit of 2 GB for any Windows file, even though it may contain only a few messages, if you never compact. Your computer, your choice, but what's the problem with doing it when you desire and know the computer is free of other tasks? Try using OETool from http://www.oehelp.com/OETool/Default.aspx to do that (and it resets the registry count to zero). It's only 37KB in size and it's "free." Personally I wouldn't be without it. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. You are kidding right? Then background compaction is enabled.

With the new patch (see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2) manually compacting
via File | Folder | Compact all will reset the counter to zero. You don't need that OETool feature anymore, if the patch is installed. steve "Jim Pickering" wrote in message ...
