Default OE doesn't open from IE link

Hello,

I recently got a new computer, and one of the many mysteries that I haven't
yet solved is this: When I click on a link on a web page to send e-mail, my
OE doesn't open as it always used to with my old system. When I click on an
e-mail link now, what happens is that a dialog box titled "Choose Profile"
opens, with "Microsoft Outlook" appearing in the form field.

To make a long story short, I have not been able to successfully get past
this point so that I am able to open OE from a web link. If anyone could
explain how to set up my system (or direct me to online instructions) to
open OE from a web link, I'd appreciate it very much.

Thanks!
Roy

Default OE doesn't open from IE link

Hi Bruce,

I followed the instructions in links 1 and 2 below and I'm now able to open
OE from a web link. Thanks very much for your help!

Note: Interestingly, when I tried to send this reply to you individually
(rather than "Reply Group"), I encountered the same problem as originally
stated. While this is not a big deal, if there is an easy fix, I wouldn't
mind knowing how to do it.

Comment: The instructions for link 2 below appear to be geared to a
pre-Windows XP version. You may wish to update the instructions for XP.

Thanks again for your help.

You're welcome, Roy.

The reason you couldn't e-mail me directly is because that is a munged
address to avoid spam. All replies should go to the newsgroup unless
otherwise specified.

Note that the four links play a different part in fixing a problem such as
yours. One may be the fix for you while another may be the fix for someone
else. The second link is still viable for XP. It just depends on the exact
problem.

Hi Bruce,

When I clicked on "Reply" (rather than "Reply Group"), the "Choose Profile"
dialog box appeared as it did before fixing the web link problem. I don't
think this was caused by your invalid e-mail address, as it was so similar
to the earlier problem. Maybe there's a similar but separate setting for
this problem? But, as I said, it's not a big deal here as it was with the
web link issue.

With respect to the instructions found in link 2, you will notice that it
makes no mention of having to click the "Advanced" button before editing,
which is a necessary step for XP, but not 98. In other words, the steps for
the two Windows versions are slightly different, so the instructions should
probably include both variations.

I'm not sure why it would fix other applications and not newsgroups. We will
have to see if someone else has an idea on that.

As for the link to the Web page, (it's not mine), I see what you're saying.
I can't update it myself, however, when you get to URL:MailTo Protocol, it
does say "To make changes.........................click Advanced". Perhaps
the author felt that was sufficient.

I will be watching to see what someone else can come up with.

Default OE doesn't open from IE link

There are separate settings for default program for newsgroups and mail.
Look at Tools/Options/General tab, at the bottom of the page. Make sure
Outlook Express is selected as the default for both mail and news. If
not, go to Control Panel and set the program defaults as desired.

Is MS Outlook also installed and do you use it for mail instead of OE?
