Hi
All my sent messages disappeared from Sent folder ("Posta inviata.dbx"). In the Identities folder there's no temporary (dbt) or old file. The PC did not crash or something else when I was using this identity. In the cleanup.log file I've found: CLEANUP: 20:50:22 [db] Posta inviata.dbx, CompactAt: 20%, Wasted: 48069705%, File: 038515880, Records: 00000000, Allocated: 000000080, Freed: 38455764, Streams: 00000000, RemovedRead: 0, RemovedExpired: 0, JunkDeleted: 0 I think OE cleaned up that folder, but WHY??? Now the size of the file is 137 KB. Is there a chance to recover that messages?? They was since 1998......... MANY THANKS. fefone |

The two most common reasons for what you describe is disruption of the
compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), and bloated folders. More on that below. Thanks for your kind reply. Do you think I've a chance to recover them with DBXpress even if the file is 187 KB large, without any "visible" temporary file? I've found another empty folder, and it 's not a standard folder, it contained all my received messages from 98 to 2002.. ![]() 59KB. The cleanup.log shows: CLEANUP: 20:50:22 [db] 9_IN_nov98-gen02.dbx, CompactAt: 20%, Wasted: 23720018%, File: 061985804, Records: 00000000, Allocated: 000000080, Freed: 61925688, Streams: 00000000, RemovedRead: 0, RemovedExpired: 0, JunkDeleted: 0 If there is a good chance to recover them, I will pay the price.. otherwise I will follow the tips for the future... and dry my tears now. DBXpress has a good chance of recovering them because it is the only program
that can read directly from your HDD and doesn't depend on the messages being in a dbx file. That said, while I believe your chances are very good, nothing is a sure thing. Many people that have lost messages when compacting have had success. If you didn't notice it in the first recovery tool I mentioned, be sure to download this patch. Among other things, it sends a copy of your dbx files to the Recycle Bin when you compact. It won't help with this problem, but will in the future, as you can retrieve messages from this backup should anything go wrong. Patch KB918766: http://tinyurl.com/mx3r2 This patch addresses some of the issues that were caused by KB911567. Address Book problems. Unsent templates appearing as sent. Manually compacting will now reset the registry counter to Zero in WinXP/SP2 and also sends a copy of your dbx files to the recycle bin as a temporary backup. To complete the fix for .eml templates, a registry change is needed. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918766 Tom Koch also has this information at his site, along with a downloadable Zip file to do the registry change for you. This is typical if you have background compaction enabled and antivirus
software set to scan email. You should probably update your version of OE via Windows Update. Otherwise for the future see points 2 and 3 he www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx And as Bruce indicates, there is a good chance DBXpress could recover at least some of the messages. steve "F.
