I just sent 30 different emails to new contacts. I mistakenly thought
everyone I send to gets automatically put into my address book, but apparantly, it is only those I reply to ( I have that option selected in the options tab) . So, I went to each email in my sent folder and right clicked on the address. I selected the "add to address book" option, and in each case a dialogue box opened up which said the address was already in my address book. However, I can't find it. So, why do some addresses get into my book and others not, and how do I find and put these latest addresses into the book? I am using Windows XP and OE 6. |

Hi sdavies6,
The WAB has the capability hiding addresses that are tied to another identity. If this does not seem likely it may be corrupt. The addresses might be revealed by exporting the address book as a comma-separated values file from the OE Tools menu (not from the address book itself). This is special format text file that can be opened in Notepad or Excel to view the entries. If the 'missing' addresses are present the list could be edited to leave only the 'missing' entries and then they could be imported into the current address book, or a new WAB file could be created for the purpose of rebuilding the file. Whatever the course of action it would be of interest to know if the hidden addresses are exported. This is also a good way to backup the address book entries. Note that all addresses are exported to one list and groups/folders are lost. I do have two identities, the main one, from my ISP, and my website
email/identity. The emails were sent out from the website email. While this may be the culprit, I'm not sure, it doesn't explain why there are quite a number of other addresses which are in my addres book. These were sent using my second identity. It may be possible that they only appeared after I replied to a message, I'm not sure. When I looked for my default folder, I couldn't find it. The dialogue box sent me to a Docs & Settings/administrator, local/ideities/(various numbers and letters)/ microsoft/OE6, etc. However, there doesn't seem to be a folder after the various numbers and letters folder. Something is screwed up here, and it may have happened months ago when I set up the second identity. "Kuay Tim" wrote in message ... There isn't a folder. The folder pertinent to each identity for the current
user is the folder after Identities. There is a unique Identity per email-user you setup as an identity for the current logged in user. Under the OE6 folder are all the support files for that identity. These are normally *.dbx files. The Folders.dbx file keeps track of all folders in the OE tree (Inbox, Outbox, ... and subsequent folders you have created). Each folder has it's own .dbx file. The POP3UIDL.dbx keeps track of messages downloaded from the ISP. If you ever have to rebuild your OE folders AND you haven't deleted messages on your ISP mail server, deleting this file and associated folder files (NOT FOLDERS.DBX), will cause everything to be downloaded again and placed in the associated folder. The Address Book wab file is not stored with the OE dbx files.
The dbx files are hidden files which is why you didn't find them. Open the Address Book, Help, About Address Book, will show the location of the wab file. My guess is C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\Administrator.wab When you ran wab /a you should have had three folders: Shared Contacts, and one for each Identity. One of the three folders must have the addresses. If you open the Address Book from OE, make sure Folders and Groups is checked under View. When I opened the wab /a from run, I only had two folders; shared and main
