Then you can't fix the problem. Antispam programs don't work well with OE,
so you should also make frequent backups. See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 You can do a lot with message rules to filter out the spam. steve "Kirk_" wrote in message ... Frank, I have anti-virus turned of, but turning off Anti-Spam is simply NOT an option. On a daily basis, I get well over 1000 SPAM's, with only about 20-30 valid messages mixed in. If I turn off Anti-Spam, I may as well just give up on reading any email. Kirk The only thing I can think of is to turn off email scanning in your anti-virus and to turn off any anti-spam program. Either of these may be fiddling with OE Settings. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM http://www.fjsmjs.com Please reply in newsgroup. Do NOT send email. |

If I turn off Anti-Spam, I may as well just give up on reading any email. Yesterday I had more that 600 spam messages from three different accounts. It took about three minutes to deal with them. I didn't open any of them. Just looking at From and Subject is enough to Identify them. I take it back. I did look at the code for one of them which I wasn't sure about. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM Reply in newsgroup "They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security" |

I don't disagree on you having it set to remove the messages when they are deleted, I was only trying to narrow down the reasons for your settings being changed, which is not a common issue. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Kirk_" wrote in message ... Bruce, I can try that. The reason that I have it set to delete messages when removed from deleted is mostly because I get about a thousand spams a day. The one computer has DSL and if I remove the SPAM from that machine a couple times a day, then I don't have to re-download it and have it retested for SPAM at the other computers location. Saves me a bunch of time. If it will fix the problem, then I will have to live with the double download and testing of the SPAM. Kirk "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... Try this; On both machines, check Leave a message on the server. On only ONE machine, select to delete after 5 days. Uncheck on both machines: Remove from server when deleted from deleted Items. (Somewhat moot since it will be deleted anyway). Give that a shot and let us know back in this same thread. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Kirk_" wrote in message ... I have two computers on the same email addresses. I need to retrieve messages both places. I a have all my settings to "leave messages on server" and "remove after 5 days" and "remove from server when deleted from deleted items" I need for these settings to stay that way. About three times a week one of my POP3 accounts will mysteriously stop receiving mail at one of the locations. When I check the settings, the other computer has been changed to remove messages. Why do these settings keep changing? Is this stored in the registry? Is there a way to prevent it? Thanks, Kirk |

Bruce:
I would have to disagree that it is not a common issue...I have several customers complaining of the same problem..every few days the setting reset to turn off the "leave message on server"..i will try the suggestions in this thread...would Outlook be more stable with this setting than OE? I have been at this for more than two years and it is not a common problem
at least as far as being asked in this newsgroup goes. Server account settings changing is a *very* common issue. E-mail scanning changes the server settings from the correct setting to 127.0.0.1 and Localhost. E-mail scanning causes other problems as well such as loss of messages. Perhaps it is causing this also. Make sure that your customers are not scanning e-mail and see if that helps. Regardless of the program, e-mail scanning screws up Outlook Express. This is from Symantec, but applies to all anti-virus programs. From: http://snipurl.com/bmf6 Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email Scanning? Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions. I have no hands-on experience with Outlook, so I can't answer that question definitively. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "QBS" wrote in message ...
