Unless CompuServe has changed things, you don't use Secure Password
Authentication to log in to 'pop.compuserve.com'. It would never have
worked for me, when I was using CompuServe because my MTA doesn't have
an SPA option.

When all else fails...

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File Identities Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File Identities Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update, installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data loss in the futu http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-98af2256ccc3

This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook Express/WinXP SP2.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

The error message
'-ERR Failed to open mailbox jcberg'
is coming from the mail server. Although I suppose that could indicate
a name or password problem, most servers would indicate a more
meaningful error such as logon failure, or password failure. The error
message that you are getting sounds more like a problem with a damaged
account on the server.

I suggest that you call CompuServe

(File

folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity

into
the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File Identities Manage

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to

local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a

manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or

shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows

Update,
installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data

loss
in the futu

This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook

Hi!
It seems unlikely, because it works well on the second machine.

The error message
'-ERR Failed to open mailbox jcberg'
is coming from the mail server. Although I suppose that could indicate
a name or password problem, most servers would indicate a more
meaningful error such as logon failure, or password failure. The error
message that you are getting sounds more like a problem with a damaged
account on the server.

I suggest that you call CompuServe

Default Unable to get mail

The Invalid password error message can mean that any of the following
are wrong:
- POP3 server name
- Incoming Mail Server Account Name (some require the full e-mail
address , others just want the user part)
- Incoming Mail Server Password (often case sensitive)
- Incorrect use of Secure Password Authentication (SPA) - few severs
use this
- Incorrect use of SSL - few servers use this
- The mail server is having temporary problems
Check these settings in Outlook Express at Tools, Accounts, Mail,
Properties, Servers (Advanced tab for SSL). Check with your mail
service (generally your ISP) for the correct values. If the values seem
correct, retype them and click APPLY. In the event that the account
settings are corrupted in the registry, it might be necessary to delete
the mail account, restart OE and then set up the account again. In some
cases it might be necessary to set up a new identity in OE and create
the mail account there.
