Default Cannot Download Last Few Messages(?)

Greetings,

Probably an old one, but when using OE as a newsreader, next to the
groupname is a number in parentheses, showing un-downloaded messages. I have
synchronised an arbitrary group and read all the messages available, but
there are still (e.g.) 5 left undownloaded - no matter how I try I cannot
get at these last five.

Can anyone please enlighten me?

Kind regards,

zar

Go to Tools | Options | Read and uncheck the option to download xxx headers
at a time.

Hi Steve,

That setting is already unchecked.

Thanks for the reply.

Sometimes there are no messages there when it says there are. You can try
resetting the NG. Right click on the NG name in the folder list and go to
Properties | Local file and then click on reset followed by compact. Then
go back to the NG.

Again, already attempted. In fact, I'm now posting to this group via MS's
own web-interface as OE is not allowing me to see (now) 40 messages -
including this thread.

D'oh!

Thanks once more.

PS Here's a screengrab of what I'm seeing:

(I am, of course, attempting all known methods to 'get' these messages, i.e.
pressing 'Get Next Headers', etc.)

While I usually don't see so many of them, I never use that server. The
technical term is "ghost messages" and there really isn't much one can do
about it. I think it happens when the servers on a server farm get a little
out of synch, but I can't swear to it. They sometimes go away after a while
but then come back after a while. The messages really aren't therem there's
just a mismatch in message IDs.

Hi Frank, & thanks for your input. I don't believe they're 'ghosts' as my
own posts in this very group are not visible - even after resetting the whole
group & re-downloading all headers. Are you referring to the blueyonder
server? I haven't had this problem with it before, but will wait 24hours or
so before wailing further.

Thanks all for your input - this is a strange one...

As Frank said this is most likely a server sync problem, if they are not
ghosts?
Set up a new news account, use msnews.microsoft.com as the server name,
subscribe only to the newsgroup in question and see what you get? I would
put the checkmark back into get headers first for this test, and use 'go to'
to ensure that 50K messages do not come your way:-)

Also from your screen shot, "I" would set read display to zero seconds,
uncheck auto expand grouped messages, select 'read all in plain text.
Then put the 'read next' button on the toolbar.
HTH?
