How do I configure my address book so that only messages from people in my
address book are downloaded into my Inbox?

Message Rule to allow only people in my Address Book.

Tools | Options | Message Rules | Mail | New.

Box 1 - Where the From line contains people {check it}
Box 2 - Delete from server {check it}
Box 3 - Click on the blue words Contains People

Left click on the top address and hold the mouse key down and drag the
cursor to the last address. This will highlight them all. Right click on
them and click on From in the menu that appears.

Now click Options and Choose: Message *does not contain* the people below in
the top Options box, and choose: Message matches any one of the people below
in the bottom Options box.

OK your way out of the new rule.

Now, only addresses you entered will be downloaded. You will not see any
other e-mail.

PA Bear and Bruce gave you the facts.
However, you may not like the results of this filter.
If you choose this option, you will never hear from anyone new.
You will never hear from any friends that get a new ISP and a new email address.
You will find that you forgot to add a lot of addresses to your address book that you need to hear
from but don't normally write to. Example, your ISP that sends you billing reminders.

At the request of several customers, I have put this filter in there mail. Only to get called in a
couple of weeks to remove it.

If you use my rule, but change Delete it from server to Delete it and Stop
processing more rules, people in your address Book will go to the Inbox and
the rest will go to Deleted Items.

Bruce has a good twist on the rule.

But to really stop spam, you may need a new email address and then protect this new address as if it
were gold. Use a "throw away" email address for web surfing and online purchases. Hotmail, Yahoo
and others will give you a free throw away address. By protecting your personal email address, I
mean: Never use it on a web site, give it to only limited real friends and KILL any friend who mass
mails jokes, etc. and uses your address in the TO or CC header along with 10 to 25 other names.
When they do this to you, you can be assured that within 4 - 6 months you will be on every spam list
again. There is robot software that looks for mail with multiple names in the TO or CC header and
harvests those names. Make sure people who like to send you jokes, etc. know how to use the BCC
(Blind Carbon Copy) header.

You're welcome, Jenny. If you want to get *High Class*, you can send the
non- Address Book e-mails to a junk folder you create, but it's really just
an extra step.

Take heed in PA Bear's advice. I had an e-mail address with Cox
Communications and got no spam for the first two years. Then, my son came
over and started checking things at Lending Tree, Priceline, and a few other
unsavory places and entering my address for correspondence. Within 2 months,
I was getting about 50 spam messages a day. I went to the Cox Web Site and
created a new address. I use my old address only for ordering online. A few
message rules keep that down to 3 or 4 spams a day. My new address has only
been given to my friends, and places of business that are trusted. (My bank,
paying bills on line, etc.). I have no rules that block messages and only
some to divert mail to special folders. It has been over two years of using
this address and I have never had even one spam e-mail sent to me.

If you don't enter your e-mail address at untrusted sites, you won't get any
spam. It's worth looking into.
