trouble in sending e-mail

I don't know whether you can help me or not. I switched from bellsouth.net
to . I uninstalled bellsouth and then had to go
back in and do some other things with their e-mail system which kept popping
up on my screen when I tried to send e-mail.
Then I called aarp which is peoplepc.com twice and talked to 2 different
people and got two different versions on how to set up the e-mail.. Now it
still will not take my messages when I try to send them, and I did not
receive that a friend had sent me this morning. I called to see if she had
sent a message and she had. See if you can fix this problem for me. I
have a small business and need the internet mail system to receive the
messages from my customers.
Thanks for any help that you can give me in this matter.

Hi Barbara,

Not knowing what you were told we'll have to start at the beginning. Here is
what is offered at the home.peoplepc.com help FAQ:

Q.Can I check my email using Outlook Express? Which POP3 and SMTP settings
should I use?
A.Yes, you can check your email using Outlook Express version 5 or above. We
recommend that you update to the latest version of Outlook Express if you
are using version 4.5 or below. To see which version you have, open Outlook
Express, click on the “Help” link at the top of the window, then select
“About Outlook Express” to see the version number.

The PeoplePC POP3 Server name is mail.peoplepc.com and our SMTP Server name
is smtpauth.peoplepc.com. You must check the box that says "My server
requires authentication," and set the option to "use the same username and
password as the incoming mail server." In the Advanced Settings area, you
must also change the port number to 587.

To Review

POP3 (Incoming) Server Name: mail.peoplepc.com
Use your user name and password for authentication.

SMTP (Outgoing) Server Name: smtpauth.peoplepc.com (Requires authentication
with the same user name and password used for the POP3 server.

Important: Note the Port Number to be used (587) - This is not the default
port.

Kuay Kim's information is right on the money. But I would add, Never, NEVER, put your real email
address in a newsgroup. You are advertising it to the whole spamming world.

Be ready for a wave of viruses. The MSFT groups are notorious for them.
It isn't that the virus propagators use the groups for that purpose, but
so many people who get infected come here to read on how to fix their
computer. So they download your post to their computer, and your email
address is now on their infected HDD, ready to be snapped up by the
virus, and forwarded on to your account.

I actually tested this with an account I never use by posting here once with
that address. I get hardly any spam to that account.

I think the notion of harvesting from these NGs is overrated.

Most of the spam I get comes from bots harvesting addresses off of form data
on websites I have.
