Default opening pdf attachments

I have OE 6 and Windows 2000 on a Dell computer. When I try to open a pdf
attachment, it opens in word pad, and is unintelligible. I have to first
save the file in Adobe, then open Adobe and access the attachment there.
It's a real pain! I assume I may have some type of association problem...any
ideas on how I can fix this? Also, and this may be an associated problem,
when I close a pdf document that has been accessed on the internet, I get an
error message that Microsoft has encountered a problem and the browser must
be closed.
