How does one back-up or copy their Address Book? I find that someone has put my
address book on to my "flash" drive, and I can't figure how they did it!! I would like to replace it with an updated version and can't figure out how! Thanks in advance-- Big John |

Click Start/All Programs/Accessories/Address Book and when it opens, click
Help/About to determine the location of your WAB file. Copy that WAB file to any location you desire and then check the location for the Address Book in the registry and modify it to agree with the location where you copied it to. The key to search for in the registry is: \HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \WAB \WAB4 \Wab File Name Make sure to wrap the name and location within quotes, particularly if there are any spaces in the path, such as: "C:/Documents and Settings/Administrator/My Documents/John.WAB" -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. Hi Jim
I thought the OP was asking how to 'export' his address book to the flash drive to replace the one put there by another. That is how I backup, copy my address book. I do not think he has lost his AB. Hope you don't mind - its the way I readthe post - from a non-tech minded position :-) Rgds Antioch "Jim Pickering" wrote in message ... Guess we'll have to wait and see what the particular problem is to be sure,
when and if, the poster comes back. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express "antioch" wrote in message ... Hi-I'm back, and Antioch was correct - actually I was interested in finding out how to do just that - and now it is pretty obvious, a simple export will work for what I was looking for but I was also delighted to get the info provided by Jim. Many thanks to both of you!! bj |

When I went in and tried a simple export, it exported OK, but now I have a CSV file, which is OK, but the old Address Book which was already on my flash drive is a .wab file and looks exactly like the one in my mail folder when opened - that's what I was looking to do. Does this make sense?? bj |

Well, let's go back to the registry and see what Windows is using as the
default Address Book. Click Start/Run and type: regedit and hit the OK button. Then look at this key and tell us what Windows is showing as the default name and location for the Address Book. It sounds like the path in use will be for your flash drive. \HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \WAB \WAB4 \Wab File Name Click on this key to see the see the location and name of the file in use in the right hand pane. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. Hi Jim Slightly OT, hope big john does not mind, but I have often wondered with the xport of the AB, as it is exported and saved in the format of an excel sheet, what if one does not have Excel but say Open Office or just MS Works, would it save it to the equivalent type of format found in those applications? Rgds Antioch Any program that can open a CSV file should open it correctly and they can always use Notepad to open an CSV file if they need the raw data. Excel uses XLS as its default file extension when saving files. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. |
