Outlook Express 6 receiving duplicate emails

I was having a problem with Outlook Express caused by McAfee, so I
uninstalled it and reinstalled it. This solved the original problem, but
now I receive every email twice, a real nuisance.

Any help or comments will be appreciated.

Duplicate messages.

For Hotmail, or IMAP accounts:

Tools | Options | General tab. Uncheck either: When starting, go directly to
my Inbox folder or, Send and receive messages at startup.

For a POP3 account, see:
http://www.insideoe.com/problems/bugs.htm#pop3uidl

That should take care of the problem you have now, but you would do well by
getting rid of McAfee completely, and replace it with anything except
Norton.

I use, and recommend, AVG Free:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5
or:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/ww

When prompted, choose Custom Installation and *uncheck* e-mail scanning when
you see the option.

E=mail scanning is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and
causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting
changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you
sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

Norton, and McAfee, products are not Outlook Express friendly, and I don't
know of any OE-MVP that would recommend using them.

would you say this redundancy is true of any av suite, or were you only
referring to AVG here?

thanks.

E-mail scanning from any A/V program causes problems with Outlook Express,
sometimes even loss of messages.

It was *invented* by Symantec after they bought the company from Peter
Norton as an attempt to attract new customers with an added sense of
security that wasn't necessary. Other companies followed.

E-mail scanning is as necessary as a spare tire for a car that has solid
tires. AKA, a moot point.

This is from Symantec, but applies to all anti-virus programs.

From:
http://snipurl.com/bmf6

Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email Scanning?

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
