I sent some pictures attached to a regular e-mail, and the recipient said
there was the icon of eyeglasses "the conversation is watched". But that's
a NewsGroup icon. Any idea why that icon would be there?

You can have the Watch/Ignore column in the regular e-mail folders, (View |
Watch/Ignore), but that has nothing to do with anything on your end.

Assuming they are using OE, they should have set: View | Sort By | Received
& View | Current View | Show All Messages.

'Conversations' applies to e-mail as well.

Bruce, I just checked mine (out of curiosity) and mine are set that way.
But does that have any effect on why the "eyeglasses" icon would be there?
This recipient is someone I help with occasional computer questions, and
yes, he does have OE. So what does it mean that it's "watched" ? By
whom? And how can he get rid of the icon and/or the "watching"?

They can either remove the column all together, View | Watch/Ignore |
Uncheck it. Or, click on the spectacles two more times. The first will
change it to the Ignore icon, and the second click will leave no icon in the
column. Same as a newsgroup.

Watch / Ignore explanation:

When you want to "watch" a message, click next to the message under the
spectacles. Now, watched messages will cause the folder name to change to
Red (Default) if there is a reply to that message.

You can easilly play around with this on your own machine so you understand
it better.

From HELP:

To watch a conversation

In both e-mail and newsgroups, you can watch a conversation that is of
particular interest you. A conversation is an original message and all its
replies.

a.. In your Inbox or newsgroup message list, select the conversation you
want to watch, and on the Message menu, click Watch Conversation.
If your message list's Watch/Ignore column is turned on, the watch icon
will appear next to all the messages of a watched conversation.

Note

a.. You can customize the color of your watched messages to make them
stand out. On the Tools menu, click Options. On the Read tab, at the end of
the Highlight watched messages with the color line, select the color you
want, and then click OK.

It means he has a message rule to mark the message as watched.

Unless he wants it, he can remove it. He can also just uncheck it first.
That will keep the rule, but it will be inactive.
