Hi there,

I've been unsuccessful in trying to import some "recovered" email into my
current O/E 6 email account.

I should mention:

1. The *.dbx files recovered were from a "dead" hard drive, and are
currently residing on my desktop (10 folders)

2. I've checked the attributes and none are hidden or read only

As an experiment, I've run the wizard (i.e. File Import Messages, OE6,
etc).

3. I'm able to "drill down" to the folder holding the *dbx files but can
only see 5 of the 10.

My question is 2 fold:

1. Is there any particular reason I can't see all the dbx folders?

2. Is there any way I can import the old folders into my new O/Express
without overwriting everything created and in the new folders and Inboxes.
I tried renaming some of the old folders and created folders of the same
name in my "new" tree. However, I still couldn't find these renamed or any
of the missing folders when I ran the wizard.

I'm reluctant to continue with the wizard until I'm clear about the above.

Any help would be appreciated.

You can't import in the normal fashion without Folders.dbx in the mix. You
will have to do it manually. The first thing to do is to rename the dbx
files on your Desktop so that the do not have the same name as any currently
in OE and then do the following for each one.

Open OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as the one on your
desktop. Open the new folder and then close OE. Go to Windows Explorer and
locate the Message Store folder for your OE identity, but don't open it.
Click Desktop and drag the file from the Desktop to the OE store folder.
Prompt - "Do you want to overwrite......."? Click Yes.

Regarding #3. You say the files are on the Desktop. What 5 out of 10 files
are you looking at? Are these for the current identity?

You may be looking at another identity, possibly one you no longer use. To
be sure you are looking in the correct Message Sto

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K03, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

I have a related question. WindowsXP OE6, I just completely restored
my HD to factory condition. (it was the original HD but I replaced it
with a larger one which recently refused to boot after uninstalling
some IBM software) I am reinstalling all my old software and data from
the HD. I already imported all my emails and folders. I don't want to
retype all of my mail rules. Since I cannot to export them because I
cannot boot the HD which they are on, is there a way to copy them from
one disk to another so OE can find them when I use the import tool?

The rules are stored in the registry. If you cannot boot the disk, you will
have difficulty getting anything useful from the registry. And you will not
be able to export them from that registry with the specific GUID that was in
use (which will have to be edited to agree with the GUID for the identity
now in use), so that you could merge them into your existing setup.

If the old disk will not boot is caused by "some IBM" software, I think I'd
uninstall it, then try booting from it and export the key from the registry
at this location:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Micro soft\Outlook
Express\5.0\Rules]

If it then won't boot, I think you're out of luck unless you get a tool such
as this one from Avast:

Open Regedit and clip Help. Go to "hives, importing registry keys from" and
read it very, very carefully.

I should have explained I'm developing this procedure for a friend of mine
for whom we've been able to recover most of his hard drive. I want to
provide crystal clear and detailed instructions for him, as this is what he
will require.

I'm not sure if we recovered *all* his folders or not, but here are the ones
recovered and currently on *my* desktop (he has a DVD of the files however
I"ve asked him to hold off doing anything until I've got a step by step
procedure for him):

- deleted items.dbx
- inbox.dbx
- sent.dbx
- folders.dbx
- outbox.dbx
- received.dbx
- drafts.dbx
- pop3uidl.dbx
- suspjunkmail.dbx

The only important ones for him to have back and incorporated in his new
"setup" are sent.dbx, inbox.dbx, and received.dbx. I'm not sure of the
significance of folders.dbx.

He currently has new versions of these folders .....so the exercise is to
give him back his old inbox, old sent, etc. as reference.

inbox_recovery.dbx, sent_recovery.dbx, etc). Concurrently, I created a new

Folders.dbx MUST be with the other DBX files in order to use OE's File |
Import.

If you put these dbx files in /one/ folder and include Folders .dbx, then
this should work. File | Import | Messages | Microsoft Outlook Express 6 |
Import from a store directory and point to the folder containing the dbx
files.

You don't have to include ones you don't need, except Folders.dbx.

If you import the Inbox, for example, just move any messages in the current
Inbox to a user created folder first so they do not get overwritten.
