Email attachments received as .eml will not open
For about a week I haven't been able to play movies (flash? mpg?) received via email from my friends. WMP opens and gives me error COOD1199 - Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file. The file extension shown is .eml and most of them come from people who use AOL and they are all forwarded one or more times if that makes any difference. According to what I've read about this error I don't have some codec needed to view them. If that is true what is the codec and how do I get it? This is something I've never had a problem with until a week ago. Windows XP SP2 Media Center Edition Windows Media Player 10.00.00.4036 IE6 and OE6 I did save the messages before I tried to open them so I could scan with AVG but they just show up as Internet Mail Message. I did find one of them "The Christmas Bird" at this site: http://www.jibjab.com/jokebox/jokebo...4/jokeid/69942. I just can't figure out why I am suddenly having this problem. These messages are sent to me from close friends and family and they have been sending them to me for some time without a problem. Why now? I have seen similar questions asked on other newsgroups & message boards, but nobody seems to have an answer. Can anybody help? Thanks, Janice |

Okay, I found out that some of these attachments will open with Internet
Explorer if I right click on it and choose IE to open with. I still can't get some of them to open even in this manner. "granjan" wrote in message ... The EML attachments need to be set to open in OE, not WMP.
OLEXP: Unable to Open EML File Attachments in Outlook Express (Fixing the EML File Association) http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=312355 Nested messages (*.EML attachment files) is a common problem when messages come from AOL, WebTV or Netscape. Some mail programs, such as AOL, always do a Forward as Attachment. Netscape does this by default, but the sender can do a "Forward Quoted" instead to avoid the problem. Often the attachment includes "Content-Disposition: inline". Some mail programs honor this. Unfortunately OE doesn't. With the exception of images (which is controlled by Tools, Options, Read in OE4 or a registry setting in OE5), OE will not display attachments Inline. Instead you have to open each attachment. If a message has been forward 10 times you need to go down 10 levels of opening attachments. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "granjan" wrote in message ...
