Annoyance - not enough memory???

Recently I acquired a new computer populated with XP Home.
Basically, a state of the of the art one with dual processors,
mucho memory, etc. It has all the upgrades, etc. that MS sent
via Windows update.

Every day it is the same story. Open OE and read mail in one of my accounts.
Switch to another acct. and I get a screen that looks like the jpg attachment.

Error box says "not enough memory...."

After reading through a few months of posts here I did see similar
complaints. I did compact my mail. etc. But the problem still occurs
each and every day.

Worse yet, when I click on the "x" to close it out and restart, it still is running
according to Windows Task Manager so I have to manually shut it off.

If I choose to try another account (I have several) the program flat disappears
yet Task Manager shows it running and the icon for it is in the toolbar (right
side) and clicking on that is useless.

Once I have closed it out manually and restarted it, I can leave the computer
on all day long and check mail any time I want and it functions properly all
day long as well. The problem occurs at first use.

Is there a fix?

Thanks.........

When you say "another account" do you really mean "another identity"?

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.

- WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update,
installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data loss
in the futu
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-98af2256ccc3

This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook
Express/WinXP SP2.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

First see points 2 and 3 here (www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx) and disable any
antivirus scanning of email and any antispam programs and reboot.

If the problem persists, then the Identity is probably damaged. So go to
File | Identities and set up a new Identity. Then if that works okay, you
can use File | Import to get the stuff from the older Identity.

I have Earthlink so I get 8 [free] mailboxes. One is assigned to
the wife on her computer. That leaves me 7.

I have ALWAYS disabled the VC when it comes to mail as
it just slows everything down and is basically useless as I use
Mailwasher Pro to delete crap at the server level. Did so long
before I found this NG with all the great info.

Hard to believe that all 7 of my Identities are damaged.
Hard to fathom that I'd have to create 7 new ones.

And prior to XP (came kicking and screaming from W98SE)
never a problem and the problems existed since I first booted
this brand-new computer and ran mail for the first time.

Think I'll live with the problem. But I thank everyone for the input.

As an aside, I downloaded the OETool. Don't see the "compact"
button anywhere. Do get the choices as to view.

Mmmmm....strange.

It's the far right button on OE Tool. Click on Outlook Express at the
top of the folder tree and go off line first.

You have an identity for each email account? Why not just have them all
in one identity and thereby avoid having to switch identities all the
time. You can make rules to have them sent into folders created by you,
eg., Personal Inbox, XYZBiz Inbox, etc.

When Steve suggests a new identity he is suggesting a new OE identity, not a
new email account. Don't confuse OE identities with email accounts. You
can have more that one email account in an identity.
