Combine & Decode Problems ... IE7, Outlook Express 6 ...
 

Good Evening ...

I hope all is well in your domain.

I have Windows XP2, latest patch level, IE7 as of 1 week and Outlook Express
6. Before IE7 the following problem did not exist.

I use Outlook for Newsgroup file capturing and all has gone well until
lately.

1. I obtain files from a newsgroup, in 'yenc' format.
2. I copy those files to a separate folder in Outlook
3. I then mark off a selection of the copied files, and select Combine and
Decode from 'Message' in the tool bar
4. When things go right I would save the combined and decoded information
as 'email' and later decode it with 'Yenc32'
5. Lately, I do not get the chance to save the file, as 'searching message
for hyperlinks' appears and sucks up all my computer resources. I am not
able to save the file and, many times must invoke ... Ctrl-Alt-Delete to
get out of Outlook Express.
6. I have scanned for MalWare, Virii, defragged, cleaned up my disk, and
more ... no luck.

Do you happen to remove old messages after reading and decodingor leave them
in OE?

What sizes are the DBX files for those newsgroups? Might have to delete some
old messages then back up the message store then do a File \ Compact All.
(Note the backup first).

Thank you for the help.

After I have finished with the decoding of newsgroup files I do the
following:
1. I select Tools, then Options, then Maintenance, and Clean up now. I
then select Reset and after that Compact.

2. The current file has pieces that are 253kb each and total file size
about 700mb.

When I start to 'combine' a selected portion to 'combine & decode' the
process never lets me select File and then Save. Instead, it displays
'searching message for hyperlinks' , grabs 100% of the processor and most of
the memory by a process called 'msimn.exe'

When it makes that one big file, you don't have a choice on the preview as
it will do that. On a large file, whew, your stuck.

I'd suggest looking into Forte's Free Agent, it can handle binaries and
doesn't need a yenc add-on. Most posts don't need a combine as it will do it
on it's on but you will see some occasionally.

OE just isn't set for binary files.

That's a problem with yEnc and OE and using a back-end decoder. Once
the combine and decode completes, it looks like a text message and OE
goes through searching for hyperlinks. I'm only surprised that this is
a new issue, unless you have just recently started dealing with yEnc or
in the past only dealt with small yEnc attachments.

The workaround, if you want to use yEnc with OE is to use a front-end
decoder which installs as a news server proxy and converts yEnc to
Uuencode as it downloads before passing to OE. That way, as long as you
have the Preview Pane turned off, OE will decode the Uuencode to an
attachment and avoid the searching issue.

.... A note: I have been using yEnc & OE to deal with binary files for over
two years ... some monster files. My problems have just started since IE7
download and installation.
.... Sometimes I would run into the 'searching for hyperlinks.' Now,
regardless of file size to combine & decode, I get the 'searching for
hyperlinks' every time. CPU usage shoots up to 100% and memory usage
approaches max.
.... I just deleted .dbt files in my 'Store Folder' ... about 10.7 gb;
still get the 'searching for hyperlinks.'
.... I do have .dbx files in same 'Store Folder' and I did not touch them.

Thanks for the help Tom.

1. I went to Layout and turned off Preview Pane
2. I grabbed 10 files from a newsgroup and copied to a folder in my Local
Folder area
3. I selected all 10 files and then selected Combine and Decode from
the Message tab, and then clicked ok.
4. Within seconds the combining and decoding was coming to an end ...
then the results were coming up and, the 'searching for hyperlinks'
appeared, CPU usage shot up, the combining and decoding became ' non
responsive ' and unable to save the results.

Needless to say ... I am really confused. I have downloaded and installed
IE7 ... and that is all I've added to my system, except 'spyware' and 'virus
ware' updates. Before IE7, I could combine and decode anything.

Any more clues Tom ?

Am I reporting/asking in the correct NewsGroup?

option then.
