Newbie Outlook Express (OE) question by long-time Eudora user: After
10 years of using Eudora exclusively, and happily, I'm willing to be open and try outlookExpress (via ie6). In OE I can now read messages ok, but an unexpected error throws me off when I attempt to open attachments. The error message is: "Unable to locate any profiles on this computer. You must create or retrieve a profile before running Earthlink Total Access Mail" Can anyone out there give me some insight on what this is about? I'm not using Earthlink, nor have I ever used it. Thanks for any advice and help, Wolfgang Goleta, CA |

Earthlink software is being used and it includes OE as the email client.
Change the default email program to just Outlook Express. First try in START | All Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults. Click on Custom srrow to expand it then change the default to just Outlook Express. Earthlink may show there as well. wrote in message ups.com... Thanks for the quick response, guys.
I can't find "Set Program Access and Defaults" under START | All Programs in XP, though I looked in both XP Pro, Service Pack 2, and XP Home, Service Pack 1. By START, I assume you mean the Start button in the lower left corner of the XP desktop, right? I must say that, though I have worked with XP for a long time, I have never noticed an entry START | All Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults So what's my mistake here? Thanks, Wolfgang |

If Earthlink is not your ISP you can simply uninstall the Earthlink
software. It's not needed by your ISP. On the other hand, if Earthlink is your ISP you have to ask them how to use their software. And, as always in this crazy world, you need to be 100% certain that you are free of any type of malware. --- Ted Zieglar "Backup is a computer user's best friend." wrote: Thanks for the quick response, guys. To read mail, I start up Outlook Express from Internet Explorer, so not
sure why/how the Earthlink software gets involved. My provider is Cox.net, I have never used Earthlink. So now I removed the Earthlink software in START - Settings - Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs - ....removed all three Earthlink programs... As a result, when I try to read an attachment in Outlook Express, I get now get a new error saying "Windows cannot find MailClnt.exe. This program is needed for opening files of type 'Earthlink Mail Message'. Type in the executable file to be used instead: (....entry field here...) " So how do I switch off the apparently remaining Earthlink involvment? Wolfgang. DGuess wrote: Earthlink software is being used and it includes OE as the email client. Earthlink is in the best position to advise you on how to remove their
software. Have you been able to determine how Earthlink software got on your computer in the first place? No need to open OE from IE...you can open OE by itself. --- Ted Zieglar "Backup is a computer user's best friend." wrote: To read mail, I start up Outlook Express from Internet Explorer, so not sure why/how the Earthlink software gets involved. Found a solution at the appended address, see there for reference.
Thanks Ted and DeGuess for your replies. Wolfgang. ======= A S O L U T I O N ========= http://forums.techguy.org/windows-95...-exe-open.html as follows: Join Date: Nov 2003 Location: New Orleans, Louisiana Experience: MCSE, MCSA, MCP, CET If you are using Outlook Express for your email now, read the following. Open My Computer and navigate to: Tools/Folder Options/File Types tab. Scroll down to the file extension "EML" and select it. What does it say in the Details section about the file type and what program it opens with? If it has something like "EarthLink Mail Message" or "Opens with blank space then continue. Click the Advanced button. In the Actions box, click Open and then click the Edit button. In the "Application used to perform action" box replace the text there with the following: "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /eml:%1 (Enter this text 'exactly' as shown, including the quotes, the space between " and / and the colon.) Select the Use DDE check box. In the "Application" box type: msimn In the "Topic" box type: system Leave the other boxes blank and press OK/OK/Apply/Close. Exit everything and reboot the computer. |
