Backup w/o Read Only?
 

Hi

I have been to http://www.insideoe.com/backup/ but still don't seem to be
getting the hang of this.

I am backing up about three years of e-mails. I have put them into
chronological folders of about 100 megs or less.

Because of the size of all of the e-mail I have tried to use the single
folder back up approach to back up the 2003 May June folder, then the 2003
Jul Aug folder etc.

After I transfered several dbx files to a compact disk I checked them to
make sure they were not read only. They were archive. But when I put the cd
into the other machine and tried to copy them to that machine to confirm that
I had correctly backed them up, several of them appear to have become "read
only" somewhere along the way.

Any suggestions as to how to prevent the switch from "archive" to "read
only" from occurring?

sure Folders.dbx is included).
Select (but don't try to open) one file.
Press Ctrl-A to select all.
Right click the selection and choose Properties.
Uncheck the Read Only box.

WYSIWYG. After /copying/ the DBX files to the HDD of the target machine,
remove the Read Only attribute before importing the files.

Thank you. Is the following correct?

So the process should be:

Create an Archive Folder

Create a new Mail Folder in Outlook Express named Archive. Move the messages
you wish to archive into the folder, then close OE.
Copy the file Archive.dbx from your store folder onto your backup media.
WHICH IS TO BE AN EMPTY WINDOWS FOLDER ON THE HARD DISK
You have to copy the files to an empty Windows folder on the hard disk (make
sure Folders.dbx is included).
Select (but don't try to open) one file.
Press Ctrl-A to select all.
Right click the selection and choose Properties.
Uncheck the Read Only box.
Open OE and delete the file Archive.dbx.

Because the files 2003 may june, 2003 jul aug, etc. when combined will be
far larger than I can put on a single cd, I could copy the individual dbx
files from the no longer EMPTY WINDOWS FOLDER to the cd, but what do I do
with the folders.dbx file? Do I transfer it onto each cd even though each cd
has a subset of the other dbx files?

I have been trying to transfer multiple dbx files (but not all of them) on a
single cd. It will take four or five cds for all of the dbx files.

Restore an Archive.dbx

Create a new Mail Folder in OE named Archive and open the folder at least
once! This is required to force OE to create a corresponding Archive.dbx
file.
Close OE and delete the newly-created Archive.dbx file.
Copy the backup of Archive.dbx into the OE store folder.
Open OE.

I have been copying from the individual dbx filex from origin machine store
folder to the cd, then after creating a similarly named file on the
destination machine, then opening it, then deleting the dbx file created by
opening it, I have been copying the dbx file on the cd from the cd to the
destination machine store folder.

Have I missed the "importing" step or is the "importing" step copying from
the cd to the store folder?

When I have gone back to the cd and hilighted a dbx file and checked
properties and tried to unclick "read only" and click it back to "archive" it
tells me I can't do it.

If you save individual dbx files, you must include Folders.dbx for the
Import process to work.

Because I have to move files that wont all fit on a cd at the same time, I
have to transfer them in subsets. Would I copy the Folders.dbx with each
subset?

What do I do with the folders.dbx file on each cd when I go to transfer the
files on the cd to the store folder on the destination machine? Does it erase
the fodlers.dbx that pre-exists on the destination machine? There are other
unrelated dbx files on the destination machine's OE.

My entire OE Message Store is only 107 MB. Yours is huge. If you feel all
those old messages are that important, then I would go out and buy a 1GB
Flash Drive and use that instead of a CD and backup the entire Message Store
in one shot.

If you want to save individual files to CD and then restore them on a new
machine, you can do a manual import of each folder doing this.

I have never done this, but check it out. I don't know if there is any
limitations.

The instructions were to remove the Read Only attribute of the DBX file
which you'd /copied/ from the CD to the HDD of the target machine, not /on/
the CD.
