Looking for my Message Store
 

Hi,
I'm looking for my message store to back it up, as I've done a few times in
the past.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application
Data\Identities\{651FEF03-F5AD-49E8-8735-3B1E6475A8FE}

When I follow this address, I get to the Identities, click on it and see the
folder {651FEF03-F5AD-49E8-8735-3B1E6475A8FE}, The problem is that folder
shows as empty. I think in the past, clicking on that folder would show a
'Microsoft" folder, which when opened would have an 'Outlook Express'
folder.

Sometime in the past, when at my message store I made it a "Favorite" page.
When I click on that favorites link I get to a page that contains icons for
all of my dbx files. I suppose I can Select All and copy all of those to my
external HD used for backup, but was hoping to get to the Outlook Express
folder and copy that whole folder to backup.
Can someone set me straight on this?

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

I'm a little confused. If the folder is empty, you must have moved the
message store, but the instructions I gave you to find it should show where
it is now.

Try a search for *.dbx and check Advanced Search and include Hidden Files
and Folders. See what you come up with.

However, the {651FEF03-F5AD-49E8-8735-3B1E6475A8FE} is EMPTY and does not
contain a Microsoft and/or an Outlook Express folder.

I try to be careful, and certainly didn't intentionally move the message
store.
I did a *.dbx search and came up with a list of all of my dbx files ....
so I guess my dbx files are there OK. How serious is the lack of identity?

Were you able to click on the folder you found in the search and see the dbx
files at all?

You can try to move the store folder to it's original location, or another
such as My Doc's. See:

Theft is no more a problem wherever the store folder is located. I would
backup all of OE before you proceed though.

Hi,

I just searched on One of my dbx files and it shows up with all of my
e-mail dbx files (not my newsgroup dbx files) in a folder called C:/BACKUP
and also on my M:/ (external HD used for backup)

According to where my msg store is SUPPOSED to be I'd expect to have found
the dbx files in an Outlook Express folder.
I guess I'm messed up. How badly?

I believe you will have to follow the instructions here to get it back where
it belongs, or to another folder. either way, back up first.

Hi Bruce,

So far, I'm coming to the conclusion that I should sort-of rebuild the path
to my store folder By:

1.Going to the empty {651FEF03-F5AD-49E8-8735-3B1E6475A8FE} folder (are
those brackets part of the folder name ?)
2. create a folder within that folder and call it "Microsoft"
3. Open the Microsoft folder and create a new folder in it called "Outlook
Express"
4. Using the procedure at the link you gave me
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#movestore and move the store into that
new "Outlook Express" folder.
What bothers me about that is that it seems to make that seemingly-complex
"Identity" meaningless.

I presume that your caution to back up OE before I start means, in my case,
to copy all my .dbx files to my backup media.

According to where my msg store is SUPPOSED to be I'd expect to have found
the dbx files in an Outlook Express folder.
I guess I'm messed up. How badly?

{651FEF03-F5AD-49E8-8735-3B1E6475A8FE} is your GUID, Globally Unique
IDentifier. Your identity in short.

I want you to backup OE just in case.

Follow the instructions to move the store folder and move it to a new folder
on your C Drive. Any place is acceptable.

You can also try this. You said the folder in the path starting in Documents
and Settings had the OE folder, but it was empty? Expand that path in
Windows Explorer, but do not open the Outlook Express folder. Now, open the
folder where your current message store resides to get in the right hand
pane. Use the right mouse key and drag it to the OE folder. When the OE
folder is blue, release the key and then chose Copy. Close everything and
then reopen Windows Explorer and navigate back to the OE message store
folder. Open it and see if the dbx files are now in there.

But *back up first*.
