I was told awhile back that a second compaction was going to overwrite the
first, but obviously it doesn't.

I've had Outlook Express on this and my previous computer for about 7
years- even brought my dbx files over from the old computer,

I compact all folders almost every time I get/delete/send e-mail and
I haven't had any file corruption issues. I have a backup set of dbx
files, but I have to remember to refresh them regularly. I suppose
there's always a chance for corruption (power outage while compacting
or receiving), but I feel that Microsoft should have handled this
differently.

A registry hack is doubtful. For that to work, Microsoft would have had
to build the logic into OE to look for the hack.

For what it's worth, I do a compact once a week just before I do my
weekly backup. Unless you are deleting thousands of messages per day
(or perhaps hundreds with binaries), and very low on free disk space,
more often compacting is of minimal value. I also have my recycle bin
sorted on date deleted. Then whenever I think about it (perhaps every
few weeks) I delete items from the recycle bin that were deleted more
than a few weeks ago.

I totally agree with you, Doug; it's pure stupidity! It's a complete
unexpected change of functionality. The whole purpose of Compaction is to
save space; instead M/Soft has done the contradictory action and consumed yet
more space by copying the whole of OE's message store rather than just
freeing up the unused space within it. Furthermore, they have multiplied the
waste by saving yet another copy of the whole store FOR EACH TIME you Compact.

They should have made this action optional by adding a parameter in OE's
Options or at least the Registry. At the very least, they should have removed
the previous set of .bak files in the Recycle Bin when they back up for the
latest Compaction, so as not to proliferate the problem.

night. It's the last thing I do actually.
I have created several archive folders on the bar and regularly transfer
files out of the sent folder into this archive folder.
I use no automatic download features at all on my system, so hopefully
nothing is downloaded when OE is being manually compacted so I avoid
corruption this way (knock on wood at least :-)
This new update I guess wouldn't affect me using OE the way I do, but it's
no big deal to have the baks put into the recycle bin when I compact. I know
this procedure probably helps a lot of people so I can live with it :-)

I learned a long time ago that when folks in the know like you think
something is a good idea and has basis for implementation, it's usually
after they have studied it and worked with it for a protracted period and
see it as a general improvement in the program.
