Default Outlook deleting mail from server, not downloading.

Hi

I have a problem with outlook express 6, that it downloads a list of
messages on the SMTP server, then it stops as normal, but
- it does not tell how many messages there are/were
- it does not download any messages
- it deletes the messages off the server
- it does not play any sound or show any sign, that it has downloaded
anything
- it does not show any error or anything.

Why this?

Everything else seems to work.

Would it be possible to update outlook ex by the internet, there is
"windows.update", but is there such a thing for outlook express?

Default Outlook deleting mail from server, not downloading.

Windows Updates include OE updates. Make sure you are fully patched.

Work on these issues:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

If you are using TrendMicro, that may also be a problem.

Hello

I dont think you understood the problem - though I tried it, and it isd the
same, no surpirse to me. The situation:

I ask it to recieve all mails from SMTP.

It connects to the server
It obtains a list of mail(s) (if so)
- here it should retrieve those, but does not. This is the problem!
It disconnects.
- here I should have a "new mail" sign&sound, but I get not, which is partly
correct - it does not get ant _mails_ from the server, though it gets a list,
which is never shown anywhere. Mails are gone.

The problem started accidently some 1-2 months ago.

You say:

You mean the message headers? To, From, Subject, etc.?

here it should retrieve those, but does not. This is the problem! It
disconnects.

It disconnects after Send/Receive? Dial-up I presume? I'm really not clear
on how you can see a *list* of message, but not have them. Do you see this
list in the Preview Pane in the Inbox?

In Tools | Options | Connection, is Hang up after sending and receiving
checked?

In View | Current View. Is Show all messages checked?

Default Outlook deleting mail from server, not downloading.

An SMTP mail server is for Sending, not receiving. A POP3 server is
used for Receiving.

One possible cause would be to have a Message Rules (Tools, Message
Rules, Mail) with an action of Delete from server.

You may want to try recording a pop3.log which will show more details
about incoming mail.

To create an POP3.log In OE5+, go to Tools, Options, Maintenance,
Troubleshooting and check the Mail box.
You may need to close OE after doing the send/receive for the log to get
written to disk.
The log will be in the Store Folder which is listed in Tools, Options,
Maintenance, Store Folder.

It is not the connection by modem, but it "connects" to the POP3 server. It
logs in, gets a list and number of mails, then deletes them, then disconnects
from the pop3 (but internet connection remains.)

I got the pop3.log, see post in thread

See my comments in the text:

Sorry for that mistake. I do know that, but did not think of it.

No. The problem is, that it checks for new messages, it gets a list of
those, then it _should_ retrive those, but does not. In stead, it deletes
them from the server, and logs off the pop3. Internet connection remains.
Proof: sending a picture of ~100KB should take a few seconds to download
(should be clearly visible), but - nothing happens. It is seen, that there is
a list of messages, which it gets (and then ??? trashes it), then it closes
without even telling how many there were.
It does not take any time to get the message body, it that part fails. The
test with a picture would have shown that.

See post in main thread here. I have it.

Welll.... it does not even get them from the server. There is nothing to save.

The log will be in the Store Folder which is listed in Tools, Options,

Here is the pop3.log file. Let me point out, that it includes a picture of
141KB. There is no way, that it can take 1 sec to download that. It took 53
seconds to upload it by modem.

Find the pop3.log here.

You were right - there was a tule like

for all messages
delete off server

I wonder how it got there. I did not know about this option, and for sure
the user of the cumputer (my mother) would not be able to do this....
Could this be installed in any other way???? Like a virus?
