Lost Folder
 

Hi All,

seems my girlfriend lost one of her Email folders in Outlook Express 6.0,
windows Xp.

Now it is possible she moved it by accident and that it became a sub-folder
Or that she deleted it
Or that it got corrupted ???

I understood that OE makes back-up folders and that these sometimes can be
accessed ... since I recall doing so myself in the past.
However I forgot what the extension of the file was/is.

So Any help in this matter is appreciated!

OE only makes back up dbx files when you compact and if you have a fully
patched version of XP, so that is a moot point.

Could it be a subfolder? Do an folders have a + in front of them? That would
indicate a subfolder. Click on the + sign.

If it is in Deleted Items, that folder will also have a + sign in front of
it. If you find it, just drag it out.

If it was deleted and Deleted Items was emptied, see if the dbx file for the
folder exists.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show
Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options |
View.

In Windows Explorer, click on the dbx file for the missing folder and drag
it to the Desktop. Open OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as
the one on your desktop. Open the new folder and then close OE. Go back to
Windows Explorer and Click Desktop and drag the file from the Desktop to the
OE store folder that you clicked on to reveal the .dbx files. Prompt - "Do
you want to overwrite......."? Click Yes.

I understood now that she was copying her Email folders, but it showed a
little windiw saying "Copying.... " (I have noticed this little window
lately as well, is this something new?).
And she cancelled out of it....

Very, very bad. Never ever touch anything while compacting is taking place.

The *Copying* that she saw is because of the last update to OE, a copy of
the dbx files is sent to the Recycle Bin in case of a failure and loss of
messages during compaction.

Have her check the Recycle Bin and see if there is a copy of the lost dbx
file, (now named bak). If there is. have her look at the section outlined in
red he

Hi Bruce,

I must admit I was worried myself when I saw the *Copying* part and
wondered if nothing was wrong with my laptop and being infected by spyware
or so... .
So I can understand her reaction, even if it is bad.. ~Smiles~

I think her recycle bin is emptied each time she signs on, by a program I
installed (IE Privacy Keeper) ~rolling eyes~
But I will ask her to have a look!

Hi Steve,

the background compacting is turned off, since I did so myself when I helped
her install her PC.

Unfortunately I do live 3500 miles from her, so with this specific problem
I only can help her from a distance which isn't easy at times.
