In a number of newsgroups I use the 'watched messages' function where the
thread is highlighted red and in bold when a new message arrives. Recently one of my ms newsgroups is red bold even though there are no new messages in any of the watched threads. Any ideas? Thanks Bill XP2, fully patched IE7 OE6 |

You have a watched message on the server that is not downloaded.

You may have just missed it. View | Sort By | Watch/Ignore will bring all
the watched messages to the top of the list. See if you find it this way. In View | Current View - Make su Show all messages and Group messages by conversation are checked. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Oziebill" wrote in message ... but already do what you suggest. It is strange because its only in the one group (xp general) in msnews etc. Other ng's and newservers are normal. I don't really want to unsubscribe and so lose all the threads when I re-subscribe without a lot of work. Bill "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... : You may have just missed it. So that means that you have done Edit, Catch Up?

So that means that you have done Edit, Catch Up? Ron, Isn't that independent of his View? Your initial suggestion made me think that you were thinking that his Current View might be Show Downloaded Messages. Hence, Watched headers might be hidden by that view. Depending on what he does for getting new messages though that state wouldn't last too long normally anyway. E.g. Watched headers seem to have the equivalent effect of headers which are marked for download, at least as far as synchronization commands are concerned. So then we'd need to hypothesize a different Current View than Show Downloaded Messages to explain the symptom. ; ) Easier just to posit that the identity's broken and suggest create a new one? ::: Any ideas? It only takes one *message* to be Watched to cause the symptom. If you are sorting by Watched Conversation (e.g. with Group Messages by Conversation checked) and only looking at the watched threads which sort to the top of the message list you could be ignoring other unread messages which are also marked Watched below the Watched threads. Try either turning off threading and then checking with Ctrl-u that there are no unread watched messages or create a new view called Watched which filters out only watched messages and see then how many unread messages the Status bar shows for that view. If Ctrl-u finds a Watched message or if the Status bar in a Watched view shows a nonzero number for "unread" you would have an explanation for your symptom. ::: ::: Thanks ::: ::: Bill ::: ::: XP2, fully patched IE7 OE6 |

FWIW I took Ron's advice of Edit, Catch Up without thinking and it certainly
corrected the issue, and of course showed all messages as read. My initial response meant that Tools/Get Next nnn headers did not yield additional posts ie all were downloaded. I have recently also noticed that some posts within a watched thread are not shown in Red. So maybe there was some other problem. Again only in xp general, which I imagine is one of the largest groups. So, its still a mystery to me - and one which would be near impossible to replicate. But it was only a nuisance. Thanks to all. I have had your problem with the newsgroup being red and not finding any
unread messages. When it occurred, I had Get xxx headers checked.
