Are there any plans to update outlook express 6 for XP users? I am
especially interested in any plans to add a spam filter.

There will never be any new features for OE. Since Vista is using a new mail
client, OE is dead in the water. As long as operating systems that use OE
are supported, OE will continue to get security and bug updates, but that's
it.

Windows Mail will only be available in Vista. There will be a program called
Windows Live Mail desktop that will be available for XP users, but I don't
see anyone jumping up and down about this e-mail client. So, you are
basically "stuck" with OE as far as MS products are concerned. There is MS
Outlook, but you have to pay for it and it depends on having OE to work.

Thunderbird won't work with hotmail accounts, well not that i know of

*Anything* (that does POP) will work with Hotmail accounts (and most
other webmail services for that matter): FreePOPs [1] is your friend.

FYI, I use YPOPs! [2], which is similar to FreePOPs, but is Yahoo-only.

You will need to buy anti-spam filter program from Norton/Symantec
McCaffee etc etc. Norton Works for me just fine but hotmail has got its
own spam filter and when you download your messages using pop3 settings,
the filters are effective.

I have a few free hotmail accounts that still work using OE, and spam
filters are effective in OE as they are in hotmail account itself.

If you are using FREE hotmail service then you can only use MS email
clients - such as OE or OL. You seem to be quite sure when you say:

"Anything* (that does POP) will work with Hotmail accounts (and most

Have you tried using other email clients to download messages from FREE
hotmail account? When I say FREE hotmail account, I mean old accounts
which were set to use OE or OL to download messages before the charging
came into force.

I have tried using Netscape but it didn't work.

Other free accounts you can use a

http://www.yahoo.co.uk

Yahoo.co.uk is an english version that allows you to use OE or OL or for
that matter anything to download and post messages. Same with aim.com
(aol free service).

I wouldn't know. I don't do Hotmail. I don't like the way it sets itself
up in OE so I am sure I wouldn't care for it in any other email program.
