Is there a way for outlook express to check for new messages if Outlook isn't
open. I remember awhile back Netscape had this icon in the task bar that
would check for new mail

Unfortunately, no. Outlook Express cannot check for mail unless the program
is opened and you have it set to "poll" for messages at some interval. You
can minimize it to the Taskbar, but you cannot place it in the System Tray
without some type of 3rd party software.
