SPA should be unchecked i.e. 'Off' for both Incoming and Outgoing Servers
Leave the Outgoing Server requires Authentication checked.

For OL:
is required in the E-mail address field ***and** the
Username field in both Logon Information/Username field and the More
Settings/Outgoing Server/Username filed
- similar to OE if one chooses the option to use the same settings as
the incoming server on the Outgoing Server tab, the

not
necessary on that tab.
Leave the My Outgoing Server requires authentication checked on the More
Settings/Outgoing server tab.
SPA - same as above, unchecked...i.e. 'Off' for both Incoming and Outgoing
Servers

Ports:
As instructed or posted earlier..
Incoming 995, Outgoing 25

N.B. Don't necessarily extrapolate this for mail servers other than MSN.com

That's relatively obvious since all other mail is http not pop3. Http didn't use SPA, only one server and because of that no authentication option.

I meant the bit about the equality of the Email Address field and the Account
Name field.

However I specifically was talking about POP3 mail servers in general, as
that is the subject of this thread.

Default MSn Pop3 Update Revised

Meant to Post in this thread--

Another MSN POP3 user did not get email on 1/23 alerting him to make changes
to pop settings (i.e. from pop3.email.msn.com to pop3.live.com ). When he
called MSN today to inquire if he should make changes from email.msn.com to
live.com he was told not to!

Why are some POP3 MSN accounts required to make these changes (by 2/1) while
others can be left alone with present MSN POP3/SMTP settings?

As those who have kindly helped me this week, I was told to change settings
by MSN email on 2/23/06. Another curious thing is that my friend signed up
for MSN around late '98 or early '99, while I signed up for MSN in late '99.

Thanks in advice!

Any know of problems sending email via SMTP? I tested it last
night--everytrhing OK---just tried now (7PM NY time) and get this error
message (note I kept check in box under server tab for 'My server requires
authentication' and have SSL checked for incoming and outgoing on 'advanced
tab':

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'MSN Mail', Server: 'smtp.live.com', Protocol: SMTP,
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

Troubleshooting error messages that you receive when you are using OL and OE
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813514

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection, it may be causing the problem, and even Symantec says
it's not necessary:

paste
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

That's not a setting issue resultant from the changes..in fact its an error common to any isp or pop3 account that times out for a variety of reasons(antivirus, firewall, server problem, message size, etc)

Errors associated with the changes should take the form of username/pw failure, SSL for incoming or outgoing.

Additonally if it worked last night...the settings were validated..
