As I understand it, there will be no more upgrades for Outlook Express
for Windows XP users. The sucessor to OE is a web-based email program developed by Microsoft called Windows Live Mail Desktiop, currently in beta testing. Is that accurate? The current Windows Mail is only for Vista users. Myself, I'm not a big fan of web-based email programs (too slow and clunky). I actually like Outlook Express 6, although it could use a few upgrades, such as better security and a spam filter. |

While no improvements are planned for OE6, it will be supported as long as
the OS in which it's running. Some might consider WL Mail Desktop to be a web-version of OE7 but not me. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) History Fan wrote: As I understand it, there will be no more upgrades for Outlook Express for Windows XP users. As long as XP is supported by MS, OE will be supported as well. There will
not be any future enhancements, but security issues and any /new/ flaws will be addressed. WLMD will be an option, not a requirement, and from what I have seen and heard, I'm not the least bit impressed. And yes, Windows Mail is only for Vista. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "History Fan" wrote in message ... Myself, I'm not a big fan of web-based email programs (too slow and
clunky). Let me re-phrase that. Web-based email programs are extremely handy and important, (I use them myself), but for everyday home use I prefer an Outlook Express-type email program. |

At some point there was some indication that some features from Windows Mail
in Vista might be back-ported to XP and Server 2003. That remains to be seen, since Vista is just out. Also that may have been obviated by their introduction of this WLMD thing. steve "History Fan" wrote in message ... I'd suggest that people at least download, and install WLMD(B), and evaluate it for themselvs. For those willing to give it a spin, you do need Windows XP. WLMD(B) will not run on Win9x computers. -- Norman ~Shine, bright morning light, ~now in the air the spring is coming. ~Sweet, blowing wind, ~singing down the hills and valleys. BTW, despite what some claim, WLMD(B) is a modest improvement over MSOE. -- Norman I'd agree. It tends to grow on the user, but it takes time. One nice thing is it stays in the System Tray when closed, and can run with Outlook Express (or Windows Mail depending on OS being used) concurrently since they use different storage mechanisms and locations. -- Jim Pickering MVP-Windows Mail applications Please reply only to the newsgroup. |

Well, I never tried AOL having seen it a bit on others' computers. I really
have no interest in WLMD. I don't like working on MACs either. steve "Bruce Hagen" wrote in message ... "N. Miller" wrote in message ... WLMD is nothing like the AOL, or the MSN browser. In fact, it isn't a browser at all. AOL has nothing to do with WLMD as you well know. I was only stating that choices are best left up to the user. I have no affection for AOL and the fact that it dictates to the user that forwarded e-mail /must/ be sent as an attachment. Likewise, I tried WLMDb for a couple of days and was not impressed at all. I was only stating my personal opinion, and not trying to talk anyone out of trying any program. -- ~Bruce |
