Mailbox capacity?

Is there a limit to the size of mailboxes in Outlook Express 6? My wife
currently has over 28,000 messages stored in a variety of user mailboxes, not
teh default mailboxes, and is now getting an error message when she tries to
reply to an email "there was an error opening this message, there is not
enough memory"

Her total mailboxes contain about 1 gb, running windows xp pro sp2, with
512mb of memory.

She is also having trouble viewing email messages, when she scrolls the
message dissapears, or turns into lines on the page with no text, as if the
program is lagging.

I know of people that have had 117,000 mails in OE6, it sounds like its more
the hardware than the software. Have you checked available disk space? If
its that much of a problem you need to download the mails (burn them on to
disc etc) and start again with your empty OE.

She has at least 15g - 20g of free disk space.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will
continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

*** I hear what you're saying, and I follow your advice most of the time.
But I do have a problem with knowing the size of the "user defined"
folders - you say 100 MB should be the maximum, but unless you watch that
closely, I find that when you move an email into a larger folder, it might
just disappear- no warning. Is there a way around this?

While most of us suggest 100MB, you shouldn't have a problem with twice
that. Remember that space taken up by a message isn't retrieved after you
move it or delete it until you compact.

I have no idea why you would lose a message just by dragging it to another
folder, but you can also right click on the message header and choose Copy
To Folder. If it shows up, then you can delete the original.

I would make a backup and then she needs to do a File | Folder | Compact
all. Then clear the Temporary Internet Files in IE and then run a defrag on
the hard drive.

See if that improves the performance.

Also check www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2 and 3

Ok, we'll try all of these suggestions and let you know the outcome. I have
followed your advice, as recently as earlier this week, usually with success.
This particular problem started with the scrolling issue, expanded to the
lack of memory issue. Actually, she gets error messages quite frequently
relating to lack of memory, which really makes no sense. 512mb should be
enough. Although Outlook express is grouped in these discussions with
Internet Explorer, Can I assume none of this would change with IE7? I have
stayed away from that for now until the rest of the internet workd catches up
to it.

The memory error is generic, but common when there is a need for compacting.

IE7 should not have any adverse effects on OE6.
