Mail Tab is Missing in Accounts

I cannot add an e-mail account because the mail tab is not in the accounts
window. Does anyone know why the tab would be missing?

Thank You,

Have you seen other problems that are similar? For example we came accross
an accounts option on the Tools drop down but, the Mail tab was not
available in the accounts window.

Do you suppose the *No modify accts* entry would also place the Mail tab on
the accounts window? I have seen a few other words that can be defined for
OE. Is their a list of them in one place some where. This is certainly a
powerful tool. It is wonderful to be able to lock out unwanted changes by
hardcoding the desired value.

Thank again,
Bart

Start Run Regedit [OK] Is 'No modify accts' listed in the right-hand
pane, Bart? If it is, what is its current Value (in the Data column)?

Tools Accounts What tabs are available here?

Is MS Outlook also installed?

Does the machine belong to you or your employer?

Start Run Regedit [OK] Navigate to this key:

Mail Tab is Missing in Accounts

PA BEAR,

Sorry I haven't let you know what is going on. I am a support technician at
the Nazarene Bible college in Colorado Springs, CO. We offer several online
degrees. We use a News group in Outlook Express as our virtual classroom.
Our instructors provide New Post as the main threads designating the various
assignments. The students then Reply to Group with their assigned work
pasted into the message. We offer support to our online students as they
attempt to set up their computers for class. During our orientation class we
teach them everything they need to know so they can successfully navigate
and interact in the outlook express class room discussion.

We come across many different anomalies as our students from around the
world run through our setup regiment. You solved problem #1 beautifully.

Problem #1
In the first case Accounts... was missing from the Tools drop menu.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express
'No modify accts' 0000 (0)
This setting made the 'Accounts...' reappear in the Tools drop down.
'No modify accts' 0001 (1)
This setting made the 'Accounts...' disappear in the Tools drop down.

Problem #2 on a differ computer.
Click Tools and select Accounts...
The 'Mail' tab is missing from the 'Internet Accounts' window.
Do you know what might be causing the 'Mail' tab to be missing?

I have been able to test 'No modify accts' on my computer and I have
confirmed it's functionality as described in problem one. Is there such a
key word that controls the mail like 'No modify mail' 0000 (0)?

I like what I have seen here and I want to learn more. Thank you for your
good feedback.

Mail Tab is Missing in Accounts

[Switching to HTML for clarity]

Always state the Windows version of the machine-in-question, please, Bart. Thanks.

Problem #2 on a differ computer:
Click Tools and select Accounts...
The 'Mail' tab is missing from the 'Internet Accounts' window.
Do you know what might be causing the 'Mail' tab to be missing?

Usually it's because MS Outlook is the default Mail Client and a separate instance of MS Outlook Express is being used to access News. The following should help such users get things set up properly:

Using Outlook 2003 for Mail and Outlook Express for News

A. Set the defaults to use Outlook Express (OE) to access Newsgroups:

1. Control Panel Internet Options Programs Newsgroups Select Outlook Express and OK your way out;

2. Do not let Outlook (OL) or Outlook Express let themselves set to the default newsreader [Don't ask, just follow the instructions.]

a. Start Outlook Express to access news. When OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch it, click the "Don't ask me again" box and then click the "No" button;

b. Close Outlook Express and start Outlook 2003. When it asks whether you want to set OL as your default mail and news handler choose "No". Leave Outlook open and continue to the next section.

3. Set the Outlook Toolbar:

a. Choose View Toolbars Customize*;

b. Select the Commands tab;

c. From the Categories list select Go;

d. From the Commands list select News and drag & drop it to any place you want on the Toolbar. The default location is in the "Go" menu.

e. Press Close to return to OL.

*Not seeing the News option in Customize? Choose View Toolbars Customize Toolbars (tab) Select Menu Bar and press Reset Start again from #3 above.

B. Start Outlook Express as Newsreader from a shortcut

1. Copy the following line to your clipboard (CTRL+C):

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsonly

2. Right-click on an empty area of your desktop and choose New Shortcut;

3. Paste the contents of your clipboard (CTRL+V) into the Type the location of the item box;

4. Press Next;

5. Type a name for the shortcut (e.g., Newsreader);

6. Press Finish and your shortcut will be created. You can drag & drop this shortcut to anywhere you want (e.g., Quick Launch toolbar, Shortcuts section of the Navigation Pane in Outlook 2003).
