Are you using Dial-up? The reference to Octets is related to a phone line.
Possibly a bad modem.

The octets doesn't have anything to do with dial-up. It's another term
for bytes.

When OE encounters an error with the mail server, it displays the last
response it got from the mail server, hoping that it might give a clue
as to the problem. Most likely OE had done a LIST on a message and the
server replied that the message is 2303 bytes long. OE then likely did
a RETR for the message to download it, and never heard back from the
server. So it displayed the response to the LIST command since it's
that last thing it has from the server.

In any case, the article that you referenced is a good place to start.
This could well be an anti-virus program scanning mail as it downloads
or anti-spam program.

thanks for the advice - uninstalled/reinstalled norton and it is now working
