I've just installed Office 2007 Home and student Edition on a Windows XP Home
SP2 PC with latest updates and the Language (Tools-Options-Spelling) in
Outlook Express 6 SP2 has now changed to French. It is not possible to change
language becasue French is selected but greyed out.

The Primary Editing Language in Office 2007 is English United Kingdom and
English United States is also in the Enabled Editing Languages list.

Can anyone give any suggestions?

Office 2007 breaks OE's spell check. Downloading a free spell check is the
simplest way around this.

Some free spell check programs.

Vampirefo:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2952

TinySpell:
http://www.tinyspell.m6.net/ (Checks the spelling as you type).

Or from this blog:
http://pschmid.net/blog/2006/11/13/80

After installing Office 2007 RTM, you dont have English as a choice of
language in the spell checker of Outlook Express and potentially other
programs.

a.. Office 2007 is replacing the v.3 English Proofing Tools that shipped
in prior versions of Office with a new version (v.6). There are a number of
changes in this new version, but the one that is causing this problem is
that Outlook Express doesn't understand the new English Proofing Tools. This
is a problem because Outlook Express has never shipped with its own proofing
tools but has used the ones shipped by Office.
b.. There are a few scenarios in which you won't run into this problem:
a.. An upgrade from Office 2003 or earlier to Office 2007 RTM if you
don't manually uninstall the earlier version of Office.
b.. A configuration in which Office 2003 (or earlier) has not been
removed.
For example, I have Office 2003 still on both of my computers, and I
still have English in Outlook Express.
c.. The workaround for this problem is to install the English dictionary
from Office 2003 (or Office XP). There should be no need to install all of
Office just the dictionary. The English Proofing Tools can be found in the
Custom Install tree under Office Shared Features|Proofing Tools|English.

Thank you for this information.

I tried third party spell checkers once before and they caused problems so I
think I prefer your work around. Office 2007 replced Office 2000, does this
make any difference to the detail of your work around?

Been following this thread since I am having the same problem and just want
to make sure I understand. I bought Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Office
2003, and Office 2007, and the recommendation to this is to either try and
find the dictionary from Office 2003, which on my system is not where Bruce
said it was or download the a third party spell checker????? You have to be
kidding me. Where is the support team this is obvious and needs to be fixed.

Seems I may be wasting my money on MS products.....

I don't know where the Office 2003 proofing tools are. I was only citing a
blog that has worked for others.

Outlook Express has never come with a spell check of its own and has always
relied on a third party program.

Since OE is on its last legs, no issue that was never addressed before will
certainly not be addressed now.

As I said, I have always used a free spell check, and I know a few people
that like TinySpell so much, they use that even though they have the option
to use the spell check from Word.

You no longer have spell checking capabilities in some
languages in Outlook Express 6.0 after you install the 2007
Microsoft Office system
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932974

Here are a couple of free spell checkers that you may find
helpful.

Spell Checker for OE
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/spelloe.html

Spell Checker for OE 2.1
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2952

You may be able to get around this issue with a copy of
Office 2003. You can install the Proofing tools from the Office
2003 installation CD and it will restore the spell checking
capabilities in Outlook Express.

You have to start it. You can put a shortcut to it in your Startup folder
and it will be there ready for you in any program. Then turn off OE's

Dear Frank and Bruce,
Thank you both so much for trying to help me. I have been working on all
your advice ALL afternoon, and I came up with a great solution.......
I have ditched 2007 and just reloaded 2003. To be honest I was always
disappointed with 2007 it certainly was not as friendly as 2003.
Anyway I really appreciate your time
Thanks again

2007, tried your solution and now I can read my spell checker!

Ken

You may be able to get around this issue with a copy of
Office 2003. You can install the Proofing tools from the Office
2003 installation CD and it will restore the spell checking
capabilities in Outlook Express.

Installing the English dictionary from Office XP fixed my problem with OE
having only the French dictionary. Thanks,

Vampirefo and the others that you cited are either NOT AVAILABLE or NOT

I have no idea why the Vampirefo spell check is unavailable for you. The
link is valid, and the spell check works fine for me.

OE never, ever had its own spell check, and you don't need Office 2003 to
get a free one. No one else has posted here that they had a problem using a
free download.

I don't work for MS so I can only surmise that the Office dev team, that has
nothing to do with the old OE dev team, was not interested if the spell
check worked for an MS product that is no longer being produced.

language becasue French is selected but greyed out.

The Primary Editing Language in Office 2007 is English United Kingdom
and
English United States is also in the Enabled Editing Languages list.

Can anyone give any suggestions?

I have this same problem with the French only dictionary - does anyone else
think this is just unacceptable? I am more than happy to install an update
or patch of Windows Update - there have been countless updates for all sorts
of obscure reasons, but I should not have to search the net for questionable
third party add-ons for something as simple as spellchecking my e-mail on a
program as common and current as Outlook Express!!! It's spellchecking for
Pete's sake! I have Windows XP Home, SP2 with Office 2007 - OE worked before

Outlook Express has /never/ come with a spell check. The OE and Outlook
development teams used to collaborate, but since there is no longer an OE
team, as OE will never be produced again, WYSIWYG.

I have never used an MS Office program and have always relied on a third

There will never be any more updates to OE except for security issues. This

without having to purchase an Office product.

Why didn't anyone complain then?

Thank you Bruce for you quick reply - I do really appreciate it.

Let me restate what I feel the issue is. Outlook Express may have been
replaced - I do not know - on Windows Vista with something else, or even
eliminated. But XP did ship up until recently as Vista has been on the
market a year? Not sure. Regardless, OE6 is a part of the Windows XP package
- Office 2007 is said to be "compatible" with Windows XP, and now my wife and
kids have only a French dictionary for the Spellcheck function of OE. Now
whether the spellcheck function is technically built into OE or it is
borrowing from Word, I don't know - but I do know that OE has a big button
when you create a new message that is for spellchecking... We had originally
had Office 2000 and it worked - our HDD crashed so we installed all new, but
Office 2007 instead. Now only French in OE. It sounds like I may be just
out-of-luck, but my computer is only 4 years old so this is not a 12 year old
problem for the consumers. I feel strongly that due to the wide use of OE it
is appropriate for MS to address this with an update...

Third party spell checkers like spell.exe make OE unresponsive (frozen) when
attempting a spell check and required removal via Add/Remove. Vampiero did
the same. The other "tinyspell" page was unavailable and the pschmidt did not
even address the issue. What next? I found Dell's CD's on Office 2003 that
came with my computer whose OS was destroyed by viruses. In the mess of
trying to salvage data and continue my business I had to get a Toshiba as
they were the only ones selling new laptops with XP Pro. 5 of my critical
programs will NOT run on Vista. this forced me to accept Office Pro 2007
which I hate and it's files cannot be read by anyone unless they have 2007.
Is there a way for a novice to extract the necessary spell checker out of
Office 2003 without putting my OS and Office 2007 at risk?

issue should have been addressed 12 years ago to add a spell check to OE
without having to purchase an Office product.

Why didn't anyone complain then?

After installing Office 2007 RTM, you dont have English as a
choice
of
language in the spell checker of Outlook Express and potentially
other
programs.

a.. Office 2007 is replacing the v.3 English Proofing Tools
that
shipped
in prior versions of Office with a new version (v.6). There are a
number
of
changes in this new version, but the one that is causing this
problem is
that Outlook Express doesn't understand the new English Proofing
Tools.
This
is a problem because Outlook Express has never shipped with its
own
proofing
tools but has used the ones shipped by Office.
b.. There are a few scenarios in which you won't run into this
problem:
a.. An upgrade from Office 2003 or earlier to Office 2007 RTM
if
you
don't manually uninstall the earlier version of Office.
b.. A configuration in which Office 2003 (or earlier) has not
been
removed.
For example, I have Office 2003 still on both of my
computers,
and I
still have English in Outlook Express.
c.. The workaround for this problem is to install the English
dictionary
from Office 2003 (or Office XP). There should be no need to
install
all
of
Office just the dictionary. The English Proofing Tools can be
found
in
the
Custom Install tree under Office Shared Features|Proofing
Tools|English.

Found tiny spell via a different address and installed it. It doesnt work. OE
still checks in French but remains responsive!

came with my computer whose OS was destroyed by viruses.

Thank you Bruce for you quick reply - I do really appreciate it.

Let me restate what I feel the issue is. Outlook Express may have been
replaced - I do not know - on Windows Vista with something else, or even
eliminated. But XP did ship up until recently as Vista has been on the
market a year? Not sure. Regardless, OE6 is a part of the Windows XP
package
- Office 2007 is said to be "compatible" with Windows XP, and now my wife
and
kids have only a French dictionary for the Spellcheck function of OE. Now
whether the spellcheck function is technically built into OE or it is
borrowing from Word, I don't know - but I do know that OE has a big button
when you create a new message that is for spellchecking... We had
originally
had Office 2000 and it worked - our HDD crashed so we installed all new,
but
Office 2007 instead. Now only French in OE. It sounds like I may be just
out-of-luck, but my computer is only 4 years old so this is not a 12 year
old
problem for the consumers. I feel strongly that due to the wide use of OE
it
is appropriate for MS to address this with an update...
