HELP RQD - Can receive mail but can't send it......

After going onto broadband recently and setting up Norton Internet Security I
find that going into Outlook Express 6 and send/receive I can receive
messages ok but get the following error messages ;

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'pop.freeserve.net', Server: 'smtp.freeserve.net',
Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number:
0x800CCC0F

and
There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was
rejected. Account: 'pop.freeserve.net', Server: 'pop.freeserve.net',
Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR unknown command', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92
--
I have tried all sorts and just can't fathom out what is causing this problem

Can anyone advise or have you suffered a similar problem ??

Many thanks
J

This is usually caused by an anti-spam program or an anti-virus set to scan
email.

Turn off email scanning in your anti-virus. It provides no added
protection. After doing so it may be necessary to reset the server names in
OE.

The Other E-Mail Threat: File Corruption in Outlook Express
Published: November 18, 2004

Email scanning slows down Sending and Receiving, sometimes enough that OE
times out. Since some of the received messages have large (often virus)
attachments, which exasperates the problem.
Some Comcast users have found it necessary to totally uninstall Norton and
switch to the free AVG with mail scanning off. Norton invented email
scanning and here's what they say:

"Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...256c7500723cf0

"...your computer is protected if Auto-Protect is enabled. Auto-Protect
scans any incoming files, including email attachments, when the files are
saved to your hard drive."
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...01100907323806

"NAV provides multiple layers of protection. Email scanning is just one of
those layers. Even if you are not running Email Scanning, your computer is
protected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments by NAV
Auto-Protect. Auto-Protect will scan any incoming files, including email
attachments, as they are saved to your hard drive. To make sure that
Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled

So Symantec used to say this often and clearly. The newer stuff doesn't
have the statement included as it was considered an embarrassment. If you
know anyone who programs for Norton try to get them to talk about it.

Afiak the 127.0.0.1 server modification was discontinued in 2006 products and 2005 NSW products that qualified for the Nav 2006 Live update patch. Even so, email scanning should be turned off in all AV products Symantec or other 3rd party applications.

OP doesn't have the 127.0.0.1 problem, but that doesn't mean that Norton is
not causing their problem.

I didn't state or imply that, nor include the link.

I did confirm that email scanning should be turned off in agreement with your response thus email scanning could be the issue. Since the op stated he/she can receive and not send though the presence of the port 110 error also indicates a receipt issue.

My response on 127.0 was to ensure understanding of the link content if read by anyone and subsequent looking for 127.0 etc. A quick version comparison with the posted information would easily rule out any consideration or confusion.

HELP RQD - Can receive mail but can't send it......

Thanks guys.
I have turned off the e-mail scanning but it still is coming up with only
one message error now which is;

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'pop.freeserve.net', Server: 'smtp.freeserve.net',

So it hangs for a bit and then says error - is there any other advice you
could offer please ? I have checked all settings and they seem to be correct.

Check with Freeserve and see if they want you to use a different port and
settings for sending mail.

Jeffers, just a thought, is the account that you are having problems with,
an
account that you used to access on dial up, and you are now connected via
Broadband?
Freeserve/Wanadoo/Orange PAYG accounts are suspended unless you dial into
them inside 90 days.
If this is the case then you need to visit http://www.orange.co.uk/ try to
log in to the account there with your username and password.
If it fails then you will need to see:

I have no idea which port number you need to put in your email setup but it is not Port 25 for sure with Freeserve. Call them and ask what port number you should be using for outgoing.

Also did you turn off your email scanning for incoming and outgoing email
