Unexplainable reversion to old Outlook screen format & loss off e-
My Outlook screen display reverted back to an old lay-out. I lost all my
e-mail for the last year. Calendar is gone. The last e-mail except for the new ones downloaded are of 16 April 2006. Outloook version is 6.00.2900.2180 and Internet explorer version 7.9.5730.11. Could this be a calendar problem? It looks like 2007 changed back in 2006. |

Well, let's regroup and start over.
Outlook Express does not have a calendar, Outlook does. What exactly do you mean by an old layout. What version of OE? Thanks Bruce, Lets start again .
The msoe.dll shows 6.00.2900.3028. Based on your comments, I suspect that, inadvertently, when we upgraded to IE 7.0 , we must have installed some version of outlook thinking it was an upgrade for Outlook Express. Because all our screen lay-out changed at that time and when we opened our e-mail we did see a calendar option. We assumed that this was all part of the IE upgrade, and we continued to use the tool mainly for receiving and sending e-mails. Now all of a sudden it looks like we have reverted back to the original outlook express lay-out, as we remember , hence the comment " old lay-out". At this moment, our major concern is that all e-mail we received since the middle of April 2006 have disappeared. This goes back way before we installed IE 7.0. It seems that the year in our inbox, and sent files simple changed from 2007 back to 2006. Even if we have been using Outlook instead of Outlook Express (and for some reason we can no longer do so), I expect that all e-mails should still be available. Outlook Express uses dbx files to store messages. This tool would most
likely retrieve them. DBXpress: http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx But if you were using Outlook, then they were in pst files and I have no knowledge of where these files are located, and DBXpress is only for OE. What I would try is to make Outlook the default e-mail client and see if the messages are back. Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Set Program Access and Defaults. Set Outlook as default and see what happens. If that doesn't work, someone else may have an idea, but I have never even used Outlook. You may want to explain this situation in an Outlook group if no one else responds here. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Theo de Groot" wrote in message ... See Bruce's reply, too.
Why it happens: http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/probl...s.htm#mailgone http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...orruption.mspx Recovering the missing data: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx (#2 and #4) and http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918069 (Notes section under Resolution) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ DBXpress (faster, more powerful, with even greater functionality) http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Avoiding Such Corruption in Futu - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is automatically compacting your message store. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org Theo de Groot wrote: Thanks Bruce, Lets start again . Bruce,
Had no success in set programs access and defaults, but went into tools/internet options in IE 7.0 and looked under the tab "programs" and noticed e-mail was set to OE. As soon as a changed it to MS Outlook, I got my e-mails back, except of course the once that were opened in express. They are in the DBX files. No explanation what happened, but at least the problem seem to be resolved. Thanks for your help, "Bruce Hagen" wrote: Outlook Express uses dbx files to store messages. Since you were using Outlook before and now again Outlook is installed(oem provided, trial install, or Office install..IE7 did not install it). The only way for OE to become the default program is to open OE, and agreeing, upon opening, to the prompt to be the default email program.
To place the OE downloaded mail in Outlook, create a new folder on the desktop, open OE, do not allow it to be the default program then drag all the missing messages residing in OE to the new folder on the desktop. Close OE, Open Outlook then drag the messages into your desired location in Outlook(OL folders or those you create yourself). ..winston "Theo de Groot" wrote in message ... : Bruce, : : Had no success in set programs access and defaults, but went into : tools/internet options in IE 7.0 and looked under the tab "programs" and : noticed e-mail was set to OE.
