Junk Mail
I recently set up Outlook Express on my parents computer, since that is the
e-mail program I use and typically don't have too many problems. They are having a terrible time with junk mail. From Wednesday to Sunday they had 982 junk e-mails. I on the other hand do not get near that many. They do have a Sophos anti-virus on their computer but no spyware or ad-aware type programs. Would that help or is there something else that would be causing them to get so many? Thank you very much! |

I'm not quite sure I see that as being the source of the problem. They very
rarely go to sites so I don't think that is where the spam would be coming from. They are up there in years and they use the computer very little. Basically just for e-mail. By the way, I do not have any rules set up as you suggested and I don't get much spam. So why are they and I am not? Thanks. There could be many reasons for getting spam. The thing I hate most with
e-mail is the people that continue to forward something such as a Joke, and keeping everyone e-mail address in the forward. I get mail that sometimes has hundreds of e-mail addresses, and if I wanted to, I could easily go to a Website like Priceline.com, or Lendingtree and enter someone else's address and WHAM, here comes the spam for them. If they only use the computer for e-mail, maybe you could use an Address Book only rule and expand from there as needed. I would filter in the mail. Start with the Address Book only rule and as you get messages you want from people not in your Address Book, (E-mail from businesses, bills, your ISP, etc.), you can add them to the rule. Tools | Options | Message Rules | Mail | New. Box 1 - Where the From line contains people {check it} Box 2 - Check: Delete it & Stop processing more rules if you want messages not in the Address Book to go to Deleted Items, or you can create a Junk folder and direct them there. You can choose Delete it from server, but be careful as you will never have any messages downloaded to any folder if you choose this option. Box 3 - Click on the blue words Contains People Click on the first address to highlight it. Scroll down to the end and hold down the Ctrl key while you click on the last address. This will highlight them all. Right click on them and click on From in the menu that appears. Now click Options and Choose: Message *does not contain* the people below in the top Options box, and choose: Message matches any one of the people below in the bottom Options box. OK your way out of the new rule. Now, only addresses you entered will be downloaded to your Inbox. You will not see any other e-mail. Don't forget, if you add someone to your Address Book, you will have to add them to the rule. It will not be added automatically. Be sure to see these links for more options. Damn.... 982 messages in 5 days? That's incredible. Personally, I would generate them new email address. Have you examined their current address for some type of characteristic where the address is simply being con- structed, rather than really being harvested from some other source. I'm not a spammer/marketing type, so I can't give any conclusive details. But, I would think something like the following examples might get you on the spam list faster that a more obscure address. ??????@domain where ?????? is: mommy, daddy, junior, boss, senior, "any proper name", sister, brother, etc..... Another thing, although it won't decrease the spam, but will make it much easier to purge. I set a simple rule to reroute all my inbox traffic to deleted folder. I then just gaze the folder for anything of value, moving it out for saving. Then, since the deleted folder offers an "empty folder" option, I just purge the whole thing in one click. I don't know what type of e-mails they are getting and will definitely go
take a look to see if there is a general theme of spam coming through. However, I am curious why they would get so many when I only get maybe 10-12 a day. Are you sure there isn't another way to decrease the number of junk e-mails through another method instead of rules. As I said, I don't have any rules set up in my Outlook Express. However, I do have such things as Spybot, A2 Squared, Avast, Ad-Aware, etc. Are they doing anything to eliminate them from my computer? Thanks! Spybot, A2 Squared, Avast, Ad-Aware, etc. do nothing for spam. They're are
spam programs out there, K9, PopFile etc, but many people experience problems with OE and spam programs, and IMHO, they are usually more work than they are worth. Who is their ISP? Tools: Antivirus software AVG is good. firewall (ZoneAlarm is good and still free) spyware detectors, IFF you think they would run them. Adaware, Spybot, windows defender are good ones. |

To everyone that has replied, thank you so very much. I didn't realize spam
was so hard to control with Outlook Express. I had signed them up with Highstream.net and didn't like their e-mail system, which is why I set them up with Outlook Express. I thought it was cleaner and easier to use. However, could part of the problem be the ISP? I see that question was asked in this discussion. I must set something in place for them, because they are not real savvy on the computer. I will definitely take a look at everything that has been suggested in all of these replies and hopefully can come up with a solution. Imagine, 982 junk e-mails. Considering they use dial-up, I imagine it took forever to receive all that crap. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I'll do my best to set something up for them. I have mail rules that move more that 95% of the real mail to other folders and I scan through the senders and subjects of the rest before deleting.
