You can't compact with OE closed.
OE may not be visible on your screen, but it is still running. Each local folder will be backed up to the Recycle Bin before it is compacted. The compaction process is going to take a long time. ... I recreated he new identity with the same results. It appeared to work and now i can't compact. it seems to get stuck at different folders to, at least that's what i'm noticing by memorizing all of my folders and hearing witch one it stops on. If compacting stops because it can't compact a folder it gives an error message saying which folder it couldn't compact. If you aren't getting the message what makes you think it isn't compacting all? If no messages have been deleted from a folder compacting will not change the file's size and it sometimes won't change if too few have been deleted because of the way DBX files allocate space. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM http://www.fjsmjs.com |

What I would try, before completely rebuilding Folders.dbx, is make large changes to it to see if it would compact after them. For example, start by closing OE (and make sure that msimn.exe is not longer an active task) and delete all Search*.dbx (assuming you don't have any local folders or newsgroups which match that pattern too, otherwise use a more specific pattern when deleting them.) If that isn't enough decide if one of your news accounts can be scrapped. E.g. often I have a duplicate news account which is just there for testing.
