Through Apr 27 I could open attachments of all types in OE from Yahoo email
subscribers to my bellsouth.net address. Starting Monday I could not, and this is true for both of my conputers as well as a next door friend who has bellsouth.net email service. The problem quickly isolates to OE (even though it involves at least 3 different computers and two different bellsouth addresses). The reason is because I can get the attachments and open them when I go to the bellsouth web-based email site, but when I access the emails with OE, there is not even an indication that an attachment was included. So far, the attachments that failed were .doc, .pdf, and .jpg. There is a twist in this and that is that I can send and receive emails with attachments to my self OK I unchecked the "Do not allow attachments ...." block in my Security settings, and that had no effect. I thought maybe an automatic upgrade may have caused the problem, but then I tried the OE software on my laptop which had not been turned on since before Apr 27, and had the same problem. I called yahoo tech support and they said it had to be my problem. I called bellsouth tech support and they it was my problem also. Any ideas would be appreciated -- John B |

Hi JohnB,
I don't have a definitive answer, but have two questions. Is more than one sender involved? There might be a clue provided by checking the properties, details, message source of an e-mail known to have an attachment. Is there a large block of coded text present that would be there for an attachment? This should tell us if the attachment is not displayed by OE or if the attachment has been stripped before delivery. -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MS-MVP - Outlook Express Lynnwood, WA * "John B" wrote in message ... The only time that OE hides an attachment so that it gives no indication
that there is any attachment is if the sender used RTF format from Outlook97/98/2000+. OE hides the Winmail.dat attachments because it knows that it doesn't know how to handle them. But some web mail services will can handle them. If OE blocks an attachment due to security issues, then it will still show that you have the attachment and its name. It just won't let you open/save the attachment until you adjust your security settings. The only other case would be if some software between you and the mail server that is either stripping the attachments (such as an anti-virus software scanning e-mail) or corrupting the message headers so that OE can't properly interpret that there is an attachment (McAfee SpamKiller is known to do this). See the Problems and Complications section of Decoding Internet Attachments - A Tutorial http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_san...de.htm#problem -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "John B" wrote in message ... I'm havingthe same problem as John. It is only the yahoo.com senders from
different people, family with yahoo.com addresses and even a recipe club that uses yahoo.com. It is so sad for us that no one wants to take the blame or try to find the answer. But, BellSouth is notorious for always having things "right" and it is always the users fault. I'm glad to see that I am not the only one with this problem. If you would like, you may send me one of the problem messages and I'll
take a look at it. It's best if you zip the message so that I get an exact copy of it. To do that, do a File, Save As to an EML file of a problem message. Then Right click the saved EML file and select Send To, Compressed (zipped) folder. Then e-mail me the resulting ZIP file. Alternately, you can do a Message, Forward As Attachment of a problem message. This is not as good as the zip file since the headers can be modified in transit which may obscure the problem. A simple Forward is worthless since it does not include the headers. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "nantondon" wrote in message ... John B:
It's not just you. I have had the same problem you describe for ~2 weeks now. My problem appears to be only from a Yahoo account (I receive attachments from other domains without problems). One day, I received his Yahoo attachments just fine, and now I only get a message stating something like "Forwarded message attached" but no attachment. Also, the size of the e-mail (very large 4M) indicates that there IS an attachment, but nothing. In addition, he is e-mailing to a different BellSouth account and she is having problems receiving as well. No one else receiving e-mail from the Yahoo account (i.e. non-BellSouth users) appear to have this problem. I have BellSouth DSL with their Internet Security package. I am still not convinced that the problem is Outlook. I have not called BellSouth yet but will tonight. Thanks for the original post. Hopefully we will have an answer soon. I'm having the same problem. An email sent from Yahoo with an attachment to
a bellsouth.net account and an aol account. Both addresses are in the "to" box of the same email with the attachment. Outlook express pulls the attachment with the IMAP folder for the AOL account, but doesn't show an attachment with the bellsouth.net account. Logged into web mail bellsouth and the attachment is there with the email. Follow up.......I was able to send an e-mail from my work account
(non-BellSouth, non-Yahoo) to my BellSouth account. The result: I received the attachment just fine. I then logged onto my Yahoo account and sent the same e-mail with attachment from my Yahoo account to BellSouth. The result: NO ATTACHMENT. The two e-mails are both similar in size at ~80KB. I had yet another friend e-mail me from his Yahoo account....I did not get the attachment. More information: if I log onto the BellSouth Web Mail site and retrieve my messages, I AM able to get the attachments through. It is only when I then download them using Outlook Express that I have the problem of the disappearing attachments. Technically, I have no idea what is going on here. I hope that some of you more IT savvy people can help us out! Thanks! "sg1223" wrote: John B: It's not just you. I have had the same problem you describe for ~2 weeks now. I just spoke with BellSouth Support....they directed me to call Microsoft.
I'm not hopeful here for solution. Do any of you also use the BellSouth Security package with your DSL? I do and wonder if that is the problem since the BellSouth WebMail allows the attachments to come through. And if you disable the BellSouth Security package?
I have no hands-on experience with BellSouth, but there have been a lot of unhappy campers with other problems lately.
