All messages marked as read

Hello all,
I've just started having an odd problem with OE news postings on one
machine (this one, my laptop running XP Pro). It's got all the updates and
IE7.

I have subscribed to several newsgroups, and let's say that I open OE, go to
a newsgroup, and it downloads 300 messages - so there are 300 unread
messages. I read one, so there would be 299 unread. I might mark it as
read, or the timer might look after that. Or, from a new check, I read
none at all.

If I then go to another group, and come back, I will find that
*all* messages have been marked as read.

I've just tried moving all the group .dbx files to another folder, so that
they would be re-created and messages would be re-downloaded, but I get
exactly the same result.

This has been happening for a few days now.

I wonder if anyone would know what might be causing this?

Thanks,
Patrick Keenan

... .and apparently, there's a handy checkbox to "mark all messages as read"
when exiting a newsgroup!

Ah well..

Tools | Options | Read. Uncheck: Mark all messages as read when exiting a

IMHO, I would also uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time.

All messages marked as read

I get the opposite. Win XP/SP2, IE7, OE6 all kept upto date.

Say when I have read all messages or even when I Select All and Mark All
Messages As Read (and they ARE actually marked as read) the Newsgroup name
still remains bold and a number in brackets indicates x number of messages
as UNREAD. This of course is a nuisance as I have no idea of how many new
messages I have to read. Even when I do a Catch Up and the News Group name
is no longer bolded, the same problem recurs when I Synchronize All.

Also why are these x number of messages are not downloaded. It says so in
the bar on the bottom of the OE screen: the current one says "1 message(s),
0 unread, 3 not downloaded". Yet I don't have any filters to stop any
messages being downloaded.

I am thinking this problem may be more to do with my ISP or is it an OE6
problem?

You did uncheck the option to mark messages read when leaving a newsgroup?

Tools | Accounts | News | Properties | General. Check: Include this account
when checking for messages and don't bother with Syncing.

Did you Reset the newsgroup after unchecking Get XXX headers? (Tools |
Options | Maintenance | Clean Up Now). Select the Group or Server at the top
and then do a Reset followed by a Compact.

If that doesn't do it, unsubscribe, reboot and resubscribe.

Tried it all. Still no joy.

This time I experimented only with unsubscribing from a couple of NGs and
subsequently resubscribing after a restarting the computer. Next time I will
try unsubscribing from the newsserver and see what happens. But if I am not
wrong I did try even from removing the newsserver account and recreating the
account subsequently and even that didn't help.

I believe it is something to do with my newsserver (blueyonder recently
being rebranded as virgin media) since the takeover but whereas I was hoping
for some improvements after the takeover/merger, nothing seems to be
happening at all. Things are running erratically-- same as Virgin Trains as
anybody living in the UK will gladly testify.

This observation seems to apply to their binary servers whereas the text
only server doesn't seem to have this problem. They are running several
servers. I wish they were running one server and running it properly.

But thank you anyway.

I would have to think at this point it is a Sync problem between your server

Hello all,
I've just started having an odd problem with OE news postings on one
machine (this one, my laptop running XP Pro). It's got all the updates
and
IE7.

I have subscribed to several newsgroups, and let's say that I open OE, go
to
a newsgroup, and it downloads 300 messages - so there are 300 unread
messages. I read one, so there would be 299 unread. I might mark it as

none at all.

Thanks,
