My freinds laptop connects to the internet on my cat5 wired network, it
works on his freinds cat5 wired connection. At his home he has a desktop pc
wired to his cable modem using cat5 but when he connects his laptop to the
cable modem (using the same lead) he gets a limited or no connectivity
message. The laptop obviously is capable of connecting to the internet, and
the lead obviously works, so why the connectivity problem? I tried ipconfig
/release ipconfig /renew but still same problem. Any help here would be
appreciated.

the modem may be locked to the desktop machine serial/mac numbers
check the settings in the modem's settings page if one is offered, or ask
the isp
a cheap router is a great way to share internet access, and they have the
ability to clone the original pc mac number
no matter how many are attached to the router only the allowed mac number is
seen by the cable modem
