Default Error Mess Socket 10061, Error # 0x800ccc0e

I am trying to assist a senior citizen with her Outlook Express 6 error
proglem. I normally am able to locate the solution to her problem but this
time I am getting somewhat confused by some of my research, Can you tell me
how to get her Outlook Express to send and receive POP3 email in Outlook
Express from MSN Mail. The settings look fine.

I forgot to mention the senior Citizen has Windows 98, no anti-virus program
and has had not problems until 6/25/07. She can receive, and send, her
emails at MSN web site but it won't download to Outlook Express 6 and she
can't send from Outlook Express. Does anyone know what has changed lately to
cause this problem?

Karen,
PA Bear asked
"Is she an MSN Premium or Hotmail Plus subscriber?"

I'd like to add:
If you answer yes to MSn Premium then a follow-up questions would be
a. Are you sure it is a pop3 account ? Some MSn Premium accounts are not Pop3, some are Http
b. What server is(was) being used for the account ?

It looks like a great number of people are having this problem. The
difference I have is I am helping someone who has Windows 98, no anti-virus,
no firewall, the setting for the mail account is correct, she uses a modem.
Her machine isn't the new computers with Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Vista.
None to the problem I read on this site address older version and computer.
I think the problem is more extensive, dose anyone agree. The error message
is " The connection to the server has failed. Account POP3.email.msn.com,
server SMTP.email.msn.com Protrocal: SMTP Port 25, Secure [SSL]: No Socket

Yes she is a POP3 client, Her settings have been the same for years....
It must be just MSN 9 because Premium is too much for her machine
Please clarify 'server' MSN is her connection to the interenet via a modem

She is MSN 9 and has been using OE for many years. Her setting in the mail
account look fine. It is a POP3 account set up as POP3.email.msn.com and
SMTP.email.msn.com. She has a modem. and uses MSN to connect to the internet.

Mae, something doesn't make sense from the later postings..

The op said Msn9 and is using MSn to connect, if true, its an http account. The live.com settings would not be applicable. The reason for PA Bear and I are asking more questions.

There is only one scenario that I am aware of where the live.com settings/server/ssl function with an http account and that was by a single person that had a partnered Qwest account with Msn Premium software installed. Imo, that's an anomaly since no one else could validate it work on a similar Qwest partnered account.

It would be interesting to see if the live.com settings work..though I'm skeptical

Karen,
Are you absolutely sure..if she is using MSn 9 then her account should be an http account not a pop3 account.
The last pop3 capable MSn client was version 5.6 which is no longer functional.

If Msn 9 is installed then the account, if it ever was a pop3 account would have been converted to http by MSn 9 or any version of Msn 6, 7, 8.

For an http account to function with an msn.com domain in OE the account needs to be setup as an http account with the following server
http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail.com/cgi-bin/hmdata
The above server applies to any fee based msn http account or an msn.com grandfathered account* when the email client is Outlook Express, Outlook 03, 07, or Windows Live Mail(beta). It does not apply to Vista's Windows Mail
- Try setting up a new account in OE using the Http with the above server.

If her account is truly a pop3 account and MSn9 is not installed..then here are line by line, step by step instructions:
-------
Tools
Accounts
Mail
Add
Mail
Enter a display name, click next
Enter your full email address including the @msn.com
i.e. if your msn username is EllieMae you would enter
Click Next

Click Next
Click Finish
Double Click on Pop3.live.com
Under Mail Account enter the name you'd like to call this account in OE(MSn will do)
Click on Servers tab
Verify if shows Pop3 server, Incoming mail as pop3.live.com, outgoing as smtp.live.com, Account name as
, your password should be a string of dots, remember password should be checked, logon using Secure Password unchecked
Place a check in 'My server requires authentication'
Click on Settings
Ensure 'Use same settings as my incoming mail server' is toggled on
Click OK
Click on the Connection Tab(Click on the always connect using box, and select your prefered method. If you have comcast cable or dsl choose Local Area Network. Not doing so will cause it to use a dialup or not connect.
Click on the Security Tab and verify that only one entry exists on the the entire tab. 3DES in the Algorithm box.
Click on the Advanced Tab
Outgoing Mail(SMTP) should be 25
Click on This server requires a secure connection(SSL)
Incoming Mail(POP3) should be 995
Click on This server requires a secure connection(SSL)
Click OK
Click Close
Test it by sending yourself from the msn account to the msn account.
Send it.
Retreive it.
