Recovering old emails

I had a system crash and had to reinstall Windows XP. Unfortunately all my
messages were lost in the process.
Is there anyway I can retrieve the old messages from the Outlook Express
server?

Thanks

Outlook Express(OE) does not have a remote server. All messages are stored on your machine once downloaded, unless OE is configured to leave a message on the folder or the account is a web based http account.

Unless your isp, Opal, stores messages on their server via web based access, they may be lost for good

Did you format the drive that had the original XP install ?

Did you format & reinstall Windows or do a Repair Install?

The extract from disk function of DBXpress (US$24.95) *might* be able to
recover /some/ your messages: http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx

Did other data on your PC survive the reinstall, such as word processing
documents, spreadsheets, etc.?

If so, then the reinstall did not do a format, and your OE data should
still be there, it's just that OE is not looking at it.

You can use Start, Search, Files or Folders, *.dbx to find them. On XP
you need to use the advanced options to find Hidden or System files.
Once you locate the DBX files, you can import them.

More information may help. What version of OE and maintenance level
did you have before the crash? Specifically did you ever do a compaction
(or see an automatic one) and notice the files being backed up to the drive's
Recovery Bin? If so, which drive? In any case, perhaps those backed
up copies would survive a "reinstall" of Windows XP? As PA Bear notes
that characterization of whatever it was that you did is ambiguous and the
precise details of what it was could affect your options.

Also, in the case of your Inbox specifically you may have more options,
depending on its server type. Again, details matter.
