In Outlook Express I can send e-mails, but see none coming in, including
those I have sent to myself to test the system. I have re-input the smtp address 'smtp.freeserve.co.uk" and also tried substituting that with 'smtp.orangehome.co.uk' In both cases 'send and receive' produces 'Authorising' and then a Log-on Dialogue box asks for 'Please enter your user name and password for the server' . Entering them achieves nothing. |

"Michael Santovec" wrote in message ... The SMTP server is for sending, not receiving. The POP3 server is for receiving. Does your ISP offer web mail? Can you access that and see your messages? The Invalid password error message can mean that any of the following are wrong: - POP3 server name - Incoming Mail Server Account Name (some require the full e-mail address , others just want the user part) - Incoming Mail Server Password (often case sensitive) - Incorrect use of Secure Password Authentication (SPA) - few severs use this - Incorrect use of SSL - few servers use this, but it's becoming more common - The mail server is having temporary problems - Anti-Virus scanning e-mail or anti-spam program interfering with the mail server logon Check these settings in Outlook Express at Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties, Servers (Advanced tab for SSL). Check with your mail service (generally your ISP) for the correct values. If the values seem correct, retype them and click APPLY. In the event that the account settings are corrupted in the registry, it might be necessary to delete the mail account, restart OE and then set up the account again. In some cases it might be necessary to set up a new identity in OE and create the mail account there. Well, Frank, it was not permanent - I think it was perhaps a coincidence. Now getting the log on box all the time, Have also ben having connections problems which the ISP is said to be working on. This makes raising links difficult. What anti-virus are you using? I was using AVG tried disabling the e-mail scanner but it kept coming back at me. Uninstalled AVG but no difference. Are you using an anti-spam program? Was using Mailwasher but that is uninstalled now. After setting up the new identity you can import your messages from the old identity. (File | Import and Export) I would uninstall AVG and then do a custom install of it and leave off the email part. -- Frank Saunders, MS-MVP OE/WM http://www.fjsmjs.com |
