red news groups?
 

As the newsgroups that I am subscribed to are shown in the folders pane on
the screen
some of them are red in colour while most are black?
what is it trying to tell me?
Is it something to do with watched conversations?

Unread watched messages in a newsgroup will make the newsgroup name red.

It is the color your configured (or left at the default) to highlight
watched messages. You chose to watch flag them, so OE is showing you
the groups with them.

Tools - Read - Watched messages
pick a color
