Backing up mail files
 

When you do a backup of your pc and later need to do a complete reinstall of
the os and data files, will your email data be reinstalled during the
restore of the machine or should we be doing a seperate backup of the mail
files with some other program designed to just backup Outlook Express files?

I would do a separate backup.

And use this on a daily basis once you are set.

This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is
written in red. That is referring to a different program.

Okay, but when you do a backup of your pc, are these same files available
for restore. I agree that it would be a good idea to do a backup with a
standalone program on a regular basis, but are my files on my machine backup
and if so, which directory?

Are you looking for your dbx files?

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of
your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the
location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write
the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options
Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View.

Okay, I have found those, so my question again is, after you have made a
backup of your hard drive and then do a restore of the files, will these be
there and will they work just as they had before??

They should be if all goes as expected. But with Windows & OE specifically,
the unexpected happens often. Since you can make a separate backup fairly
easily, I say why take a chance you might regret later. Like I said before,
you should make a daily backup as a matter of insurance during normal usage.

Well, I took the simple way of getting the files. I merely "imported"
through OE from my backup disk to the account in OE. Took about 20 seconds
and I had all information in place.
