Message Rules for mail
I'm having a problem with my message rules. With may outlook express I have over 600 dbx file/folder to keep tack of my mail. to help manage the common received mail I setup over 130 message rules. Some how my Outlook Express hiccupped I get some message saying something about a error it shutdown Outlook Express and on restart I loss all my message rules. I was redoing them was up to about thirty and the program did it again. I could use some help thoughts on this problem. For starters just what file is this and what folder is it in. If it getting deleted I could copy a back up file to reinstall if lost at the least.

the rules are kept in the registry.
there is a limit to the number of rules you can have. do not know what the exact limit is. check here on backup/restore of OE items. http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/ "Billy E. The number of rule is not the main factor, but between rules and Blocked Senders, you can only have 4096 entries. (i.e,), if you had only one rule for a subject, and tried to put in 4097 subjects, you are SOL.
IMHO, if you have 600 folders, and 130 rules, I think you should be looking for a sturdier program than OE. If you stick with OE, at least learn to back it up daily. The rules could have been replaced in minutes. This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is written in red. That is referring to a different program. What Bruce said.
General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Frequently [I'd recommend daily, in your case] perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is automatically compacting your message store. - Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause corruption (e.g., loss of messages). Disable it. It provides no additional protection. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) AumHa VSOP & Admin; DTS-L.org "Billy E. Karlinsey" wrote in message ...
