Server disconnect

When downloading multiple messages, often my e-mail disconnects from the
server part way through. I have tried increasing my server timeout but this
does not seem to help. Any ideas.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs, slows down sending and receiving, and
causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes
and has even been responsible for lose of messages. Your up-to-date A/V
program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see:

The Server Timeout is how long OE will wait for a response from the
server before OE will consider that the connection to the server has
been lost and give up the send and receive. One to 2 minutes is
reasonable.

Do you get any error message when this happens?

If you try the send and receive again, do the messages eventually all
come through? If so, it's likely a problem with the mail server.

My server timeout is set for 1 minute.
I do not get an error message when I lose my connection to the server. I
have to exit the program and then re-enter in order to retrieve the messages
and some times do this more than once. Eventually I receive all messages

Extend the timeout to 5 minutes. and take heed of the following.

General precautions for Outlook Express:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your
mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer
of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as
time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will

http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

If you don't get any error message, then what exactly happens to make
you think that the connection has been lost?

Is the problem with your Hotmail account or another type?

What type of connection to the Internet do you have? Dial-up, Cable,
DSL, Wi-Fi?
