Multiple problems in OE newsgroups

You have NAV installed: Is it part of NIS?

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

I use OE as a news reader *only* and have not set up a mail account in
OE. For mail, I use netscape 7.2. After using OE news for several
months without problems, suddenly I'm having multiple problems with
error messages. If I can even download messages in a group, (often it
says it can't connect to the server), when I try to post or reply, the
post seems to hang and send later with this error message; (The
beginning and ending quotes are mine.)

"Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks.
Please review the list of errors below for more details.

Outlook Express could not post your message. Subject " oops!".
Account:
"nntp.charter.net". Server: nntp.charter.net". Protocol:NNTP. Port: 119,
Secure(SSL)
No. Socket Error: 10060, Error Number; 0x800CCCOE"

. Sometimes it is hours later, or the next day, before the message
sends. If I close OE news, I can't open it again until the message
sends. I do not have it set to save sent messages in the sent folder.
If I do try to launch news again before the message sends, I get this
error message;

"Outlook Express could not be started because another instance of it is
still running on your computer. Please log off of Windows
Outlook Express. If the problem persists, save your work, and then
restart your computer."

When I shut down the computer, I have to wait while it trys to end
program. I always have to click "end now" to continue the shut down.

Other times, when I click on a message ,after reading several, it will
say "finding host" and I get this one;

Message could not be displayed
Outlook Express encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this
message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try
again.

As I only use OE for news, there are no messages in the "local"
folders. I have no messages to save, so I don't mind starting from the
beginning, if that's what it takes. I only have one identity, "main".
Any suggestions on how to get OE news working again will be much
appreciated. I am posting this from an *old* version of netscape
because it works best now. TIA.

No, it is not. I don't use NIS. I have ZA Pro, ad-aware, microsoft
antispyware, and spybot s&d. I also have a linksys wireless router with
speedboost, fully locked down. I don't see anything in NIS that I would
need. Thank you for your reply.

My dog is worried about the economy because Alpo is up to $3.00 a can.
That's almost $21.00 in dog money.

Thanks for the reminder. Sorry, I failed to list NAV 2005, included in
NSW premier,(includes ghost). I think I mentioned it in a previous
post. I have used it since 2000 with no problems and *no viruses*, or
is that virii? 8) If you watch the Sunday newspaper ads, they can be
found with full price rebates, upgrade and other rebates. I have not
paid more than the price of a postage stamp since I bought the first
version, five years ago. Same deal with ZA Pro.

BTW, it is posting without problems again today. Now, i'm sure that my
problem was with my sucky ISP, not OE.
