In the case of .doc attachments they are deleted (from the TIF) when
the OE message window they were launched from is closed.
BTW that suggests that when an attached file is erroneously updated
by a Word user the update might be at least somewhat recoverable,
e.g. provided the launching OE message window was closed *before*
the last Save was done from Word.

Because the Word file was opened from the TIF, isn't the save location the
TIF unless a Save As is done?

Yes. Exactly. But the problem is that OE deletes the file when the
message window is closed. My speculation was that if the message
window was closed when Word had the file open, either the delete
would not succeed or the changed file would still be in memory so that
if the user saved it before closing Word or if the user tried to close Word
expecting Word to notify them to save it then either the user would become
aware that the file was no longer there (in the TIF) or they would be saving
it when it would be less susceptible to being deleted (e.g. no longer would be
deleted immediately by OE.)

E.g. then when the user came here moaning about losing all their work
there could actually be a possibility of being able to recover it. eg
BTW how many cycles of automatic backup does Word keep anyway?
Perhaps that would be another source of recovery in the same scenario.

Actually you can. When the messages with images are opened, then they
all
get put into the Temporary Internet Files folder and OE references them
from
there. Their filenames do not represent the attachment filenames
however,
so you would have a hard time finding them. Also they are deleted when
OE
is closed.

Deleted when OE is closed or when the message is closed?
FWIW I would check with FileMon filtering on Temp.

I have my own utility.

The files are only deleted when OE is closed, not when the message is
closed.

In the case of .doc attachments they are deleted (from the TIF) when
the OE message window they were launched from is closed.
BTW that suggests that when an attached file is erroneously updated
by a Word user the update might be at least somewhat recoverable,

the last Save was done from Word.

That is not the case with images. There is a difference between opening a
multipart message and its pieces and opening an attachment with another
program.

Ok Thanks

Too bad. Sometimes I can recover email attachments in Outlook by using
the
temp folders and a graphics thumbnailing program like ThumbsPlus. Just
was
wondering about if such could be done for the OutlookExpress.
