HI, when Outlook Express opens, after dialing up, it connects, searches
for new messages, and then I get that dialog box, error socket number thing, and then I just click Send and Receive and all works fine. I did compact my folders a day before this started happening. I have been having these kinds of problems off and on for a whole year. Can I just restore Outlook Express without doing all that Internet Explorer stuff. Something must be corrupted in my registry somewhere. Oh, also I did run a defrag using Diskeeper 9.0. Well, please respond if you can assist me, perhaps there is some avenue I can take to correct this. Thanks for listening, Derek |

Are you scanning email for viruses?

HI, no the dialup does not disconnect. It won't read the messages that
are sent to the inbox. As soon as I click on Send and Receive it works fine. Must be something to do with the locking on to Outlook Express then refusing to automatically check for new messages. Please keep the help coming in, don't think the error thingie is that important as I have seen them before. Thanks for helping, Derek |

OK, here is the error thingie. Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL):
No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D I can send and receive manually. I have tried everything to fix it. I don't understand how these things get mucked up so easily and the only way that everyone says to follow is remove IE 6 and Outlook Express and start over. You shouldn't have to do that, and if you do then all those people who design these programs that most people use in Windows, need to see what an average computer goes through when these glitches occur. Anyway, if you can come up with any alternatives, appreciate it, grateful, Derek |

What is *tried everything*? Did you disable e-mail scanning? Did you verify
all account settings are correct? You may have a damaged identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. If all is well, you can import your messages from the old identity and delete it. That's not the whole error message. You left off the first couple of
lines. But basically, the 11001 means that you have the wrong server name in OE at Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties, Servers, Incoming POP3 Server. Check with your ISP the correct server name.
