Can't dl hotmail msgs using OE6

I have been using OE6 to get to my hotmail account, and a few days ago it
suddenly stopped working. I contacted hotmail support, they suggested
deleting and reinstalling the hotmail account in OE, which reduced the error
messages from two to one, but I still couldn't get messages. I complained
again, they suggested going to OE tech support. I couldn't find the answer.
Can you help?

Crunchie

Hi Claire,

After removing and adding my hotmail account in Outlook Express per your
instructions, an attempt to download hotmail messages now only produces one
error message, so we're making progress! No email was downloaded, however.
During the setup process there was a complaint about someuser not being a
valid user ID, so I changed it to and tried to get mail
again. Same error message. Suggestions?

P.S. In the dialog box requesting user ID where you said to enter someuser it
says right under the entry area "example:

a little confusing.

Can't dl hotmail msgs using OE6

Assuming this is a sudden, new problem:

1. That error and similar (80004005) almost always indicates problems on
either MSN/Hotmail's end (~95%) or that of your ISP (~4%), not yours. Until
it automagically clears up, access your account at www.hotmail.com.

2. Otherwise, it's possible that your current Identity may be damaged,
especially if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your
accounts in a new Named Identity (File Identities Add new identity).
Assuming all is well, import messages from the old Identity before deleting
it (File Identities Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items (Local folders) to archive messages. Move
them to local folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items (Local) folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- While Hotmail messages aren't scanned, your anti-virus application's email
scanning feature can also cause such corruption. Disable it. It provides
no additional protection.

The automagic solution is working! I tried the old scenario again after

There has been no change to Outlook Express *although I installed the
latest IE patch recently* or the procedure I use, Hotmail password has
not been changed, and my account is well within the 250 Mb limit. I am
able to access messages through the Hotmail website. Please advise.

P.S. Recently installed some new software, but Hotmail continued to work
until two days ago.
